I would like to start a discussion about how important wall anchoring really is for Billy shelves. IKEA recommends securing these shelves to the wall, mainly to prevent tipping, but I wonder how critical this is in practice. Are there cases where the shelves can stand safely without being anchored to the wall, or is it always mandatory? I am also interested in whether this depends on the room, frequency of use, or the weight of the load. Has anyone had experience with the stability of Billy shelves without wall anchoring? And how high is the risk that the shelves might tip over? I look forward to detailed opinions and also technical assessments.
I would like to point out that the general recommendation for wall mounting does not always take all relevant conditions into account.
On one hand, it depends on the wall structure. In some older buildings, the walls are made of very porous material that does not allow for a secure anchoring. In other cases, smooth or drywall surfaces are underestimated, which may only provide limited holding strength.
On the other hand, one should consider the load capacity of the anchors and ensure proper installation, as the supposed safety benefit can itself become an issue if done incorrectly.
Therefore, it would be helpful if keo68 could also mention what type of walls he has at home and how he plans to carry out the mounting.

You shouldn’t underestimate the risk

Thanks for your assessments so far!

You raised an important point, thanks for asking. My apartment mainly has solid concrete walls, so a stable fixing should generally be possible.
I am more concerned about damaging the wall and choosing the right anchors. How high is the risk of using the wrong anchors during installation? And how can I estimate the load capacity as reliably as possible without immediately hiring a structural engineer?
I would appreciate tips on suitable anchors and a safe approach.

How high is the risk of using the wrong wall plugs during installation? The risk definitely exists, especially if you don’t use suitable wall plugs for concrete walls.
For concrete, expansion anchors or chemical anchors (injection mortar) are recommended – the latter particularly for very heavy loads.
Most Billy shelves are designed with a slim construction and book loads of around 20-30 kg (44-66 lbs) per shelf. Therefore, the wall fixing should not bear too much weight but primarily prevent tipping.
In many cases, standard concrete expansion anchors (6-8 mm (0.24-0.31 inches)) with matching screws are sufficient.
My tip for secure installation:
1. Choose wall plugs suitable for the wall and pre-drill the holes.
2. Clean the drill holes thoroughly from dust.
3. Do not overtighten the screws, as this can cause the wall plug to tear out.
4. Distribute the weight evenly.
One more tip: If you’re unsure, buy a fixing set from IKEA first, as the included components usually have the correct size.
I understand why people might be concerned about the installation. For me, the most important thing was that once mounted, nothing would tip over, and it gave a real sense of safety. Since I have small children at home, I didn’t want to take any risks.
Maybe you could ask someone with experience to help you with the drilling? For me, it was worth not doing it alone.

How important is wall mounting for Billy shelves really?

Of course it’s important, but the effort is manageable Exactly! Installation takes just 10 to 15 minutes, and after that, you can confidently use the shelf – that peace of mind is truly priceless.I think this should just be part of buying furniture, like IKEA does with the Billy shelf. 😉
