Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat specific issue with the Billy shelf from IKEA: the screws in my shelf have become a bit loose, which affects its stability. I want to secure the screws so that the shelf sits firmly again and no longer has any wobbly spots. Does anyone have experience or tips on the best way to secure the screws without damaging the material or making major modifications? Thanks in advance for your help!

Replacement can be difficult since the holes are pre-drilled. It is better to secure the existing holes with wood glue and dowels and use the original screws.

Screws with different dimensions usually do not fit through the pre-drilled holes. Using anchors is easier.

Exactly, it is easier and more stable to prepare the holes using wall plugs. The original BILLY screws are optimized for this. Other screws can be too large or too small, which can cause issues. Therefore, I recommend securing with wood glue and appropriate wall plugs.

A quick update from my side: Yesterday, I used the dowel method with wood glue. It took a while for everything to cure, but now the screws hold much better, and the shelf no longer wobbles unpleasantly.

If the gap isn’t too large, you can also use small wooden shims or washers for this

I added those because otherwise the screws would have had some play – it worked really well! Thanks again to everyone.

That's brilliant, a great success! 🙂 Thanks for the update, it will surely help many here in the forum.

I will also work on my shelves this weekend. Looking forward to trying out the dowels and glue!
