Hello
The IKEA online planner shows me an option for an electric push-to-open mechanism for the FA170 (base cabinet for sink with drawer), Utrusta item number 702.272.36.
Could someone please explain to me exactly how it works?
I am not entirely clear on it even after reading the installation manual.
Best regards

IKEA-Experte16 Aug 2012 12:29Thanks, even in the Blum video they don’t have bin lids!
I would really like the electric push-to-open mechanism, but two things bother me:
- It’s expensive and requires standby powerWhether 3.5 kWh per year is economically or ecologically justifiable is something everyone must decide for themselves. Keep in mind how you behave otherwise—for example, an old VCR on standby uses far more power.
- What good is automatic drawer opening if I still can’t open the bin lid with my hands full?
Do you really need the lid? If the trash starts to smell, it’s definitely time to take it out. The underside of the lid usually looks anything but clean. Do you always clean it thoroughly?
Questions:
Is it possible to mount the drawer slightly tilted (front a bit lower than back) so the drawer always opens fully?Lowering the front won’t work because the rail is already resting at the bottom of the cabinet, but raising the back a little is possible. This would require filing the back of the rail slightly and adding a spacer underneath. However, you have to accept that the front won’t sit flush against the cabinet when closed unless you also adjust the front panel mounting.
Apparently, IKEA has no solution for automatic opening of the bin lid. Does anyone know of solutions from other manufacturers that could be installed in an IKEA drawer, which mechanically open the bin lid when the drawer is opened? Then you’ll need a completely different solution, for example from Franke, or you’ll have to make something yourself.
In my current kitchen (also about 20 years old) I have a similar push-to-open mechanism, but purely mechanical, not electric. You tap a lever under the drawer (at the toe kick) with your foot (which is usually free), and the drawer opens mechanically, powered by a spring. Closing the drawer tensions the spring again.
I’ll find out if a mechanical solution like this could be adapted to IKEA drawers.
If anyone has good ideas, please share.I always prefer simple mechanical solutions. Some people just won’t like the look of the electric version.
The spring is a problem because it would compete with the drawer’s own soft-close spring mechanism.

Sektionschef16 Aug 2012 13:13IKEA expert, thank you for your helpful response.
I have now found what we have at home, exactly this one:
We rarely, if ever, clean the lid, and it’s not really necessary—probably because we can’t overfill the bins; otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to close the pull-out drawer.
In our case, the front of this waste separator is screwed to the pull-out drawer front, meaning when the drawer is opened, the bins slide out with it, while the lid stays inside. We have a foot pedal spring mechanism so that when you tap it with your foot, everything automatically pulls out, and when closing, the spring tightens.
I didn’t know that IKEA drawers with dampers also have a return spring. I thought only the closing impact was dampened.
For a waste pull-out, the automatic extension is more important to me than the automatic closing, so I would prefer a solution without self-closing and just a “normal,” non-damped slide.
Does IKEA offer something like this, or would I have to buy it from a specialized retailer again?
Or I might try the method I mentioned earlier with a drawer incline.
One more thing: We want to install the large Domsjö sink in an 80cm (31.5 inch) base cabinet with pull-out drawer. Is there any way to find out how much space this base cabinet leaves available for a waste separation system? I understand that water hoses, siphons, etc., also take up some space. At my nearest IKEA store, there is an 80cm Domsjö base cabinet without a pull-out (but with installed siphons) and an 80cm with pull-out but with a different sink on display.
Do I have to visit again and measure the free space under the sink, or can I find this information somewhere else?
Best regards

Sektionschef16 Aug 2012 22:38For anyone interested:
I have now found a double trash bin that can be installed in a pull-out drawer and whose lid opens automatically when the drawer is pulled out. It’s the Ökoflex 3434 model. It can also be combined with a foot pedal, which then opens the drawer automatically when you tap the baseboard with your foot.
Now I just need to clarify whether this will fit inside the base cabinet with a pull-out drawer of a Domsjö sink. According to the brochure, I need a clear height of at least 431mm (17 inches) and a depth of 372mm (15 inches).
Best regards,

IKEA-Experte19 Aug 2012 19:37Glad you found something suitable for yourself.
The dimension drawings specify a maximum width of 60 cm (24 inches). Have you taken that into account? I assume this relates to the attachment of the lid. I would check this with Hailo beforehand.

Yes, that's correct. Thanks for the hint. I am currently trying to locate a Hailo showroom/dealer in Vienna where I can see this system in person. The waste sorter we have in our current apartment is designed for 30 cm (12 inches) drawers but is installed on the left side inside a 60 cm (24 inches) base cabinet. The lid on the opposite side was also mounted on the left side using a metal bracket. I think the 3434 system can be installed similarly, but I need to clarify that.
