I completely agree. When it comes to home furnishings, IKEA is definitely my favorite... the price-performance ratio is excellent, and the furniture lasts forever... I can recommend IKEA for almost everything... okay, I have noticed that when you shop at IKEA and know exactly what you need, you still end up buying more, which you definitely notice on your budget.
Five years ago, we consciously decided against Ikea. Although the quality is decent mid-range, when I factor in the labor time (and the sweat) for assembly and installation, it’s no longer as affordable as it initially seems.
Back then, we chose a branded kitchen, which we selected and ordered through a small online retailer specializing in kitchen planning. The kitchen is from Wellmann (a brand of Alno AG) and was delivered fully pre-assembled cabinet by cabinet, directly from the factory by truck. Similar offers likely exist for other brands as well...
Planning the kitchen calmly in the evenings via email and phone over about three weeks was enjoyable and worked perfectly; our contact person took a lot of time and gave us some very helpful advice.
Ultimately, this method of buying a kitchen including appliances was cheaper than Ikea and significantly less expensive than all the offers from numerous kitchen studios that exhausted us with their discount battles and pricing games... Maybe it’s worth giving it a try?

supermario6 Dec 2012 17:16Hey, I’ve had my Ikea kitchen for about a year now and overall I’m satisfied, even though a few compromises were necessary. For my narrow floor plan, the cabinet selection was okay, but I couldn’t get everything to fit perfectly. The installation was manageable, but I really struggled with one wall that wasn’t plumb. So far, the fittings and doors are holding up well, and there’s no rattling. I got the appliances directly from Ikea, simply because I didn’t want any surprises.
What I’m curious about: How do you handle spare parts or if you need to reorder something later on? Is it a smooth process, or are there problems if the product lines change?

Naschkatze3 Mar 2013 22:47Hello,
I can also share something about spare parts and reordering: I once had to buy a replacement front because one got damaged. At first, I was relieved that it seemed easy within the Ikea system, but actually, the model had changed slightly and the color no longer matched perfectly. In the store, I was only able to get help because I still had the old item number – so it’s a good idea to write that down. For other parts like hinges, it was no problem; they were compatible.
Adjusting drawers goes pretty quickly with the right screwdriver, especially since Ikea explains this in the manual, but if the cabinet frame is slightly warped, you can end up spending quite some time trying to fix it. It’s best to align everything precisely during assembly to save yourself some trouble later.

I know quite a few people working for a logistics company that delivers and also assembles IKEA kitchens when requested by the customer. The installers there are generally not very enthusiastic about IKEA kitchens. They clearly say that the quality has significantly declined over the past few years, despite the price increases, and they are now quite reluctant to assemble these kitchens.
I personally had an IKEA kitchen until six years ago, which was just five years old when I moved out of my previous apartment. In the area above the stove (to the right and left of the range hood), the undersides of the cabinets were partly swollen due to the heat and moisture generated during cooking, even though I had a good extractor hood. For me, it’s clear: never an IKEA kitchen again. (MY subjective opinion!!)

The good old Faktum—now 25 years old—is being replaced by a new kitchen system: Metod.
We initially wanted Ikea for our new house as well. However, the cabinets are only available with a carcass height of 70 cm (28 inches). Anything taller has to be compensated with a higher plinth. But that doesn’t necessarily create more storage space.
Therefore, we will look around to see if we can find another kitchen in the mid-price range that better matches our requirements (for example, carcass height 78 cm (31 inches), then in a 6-unit grid).
