Hello everyone, I have a specific problem with the drawer handles of the IKEA Hemnes series and hope to find some experiences or solutions here.

Specifically, the handles on my Hemnes dressers tend to feel loose after some time and sometimes even wobble slightly, which makes using them increasingly uncomfortable. Tightening the screws often only helps temporarily. I also wonder if the materials used for the drawer fronts might be less durable, contributing to this issue.

My main questions are: How can the handles be prevented from loosening permanently? Are there proven methods or tools that are especially recommended for the Hemnes handles? And any tips on how to avoid damaging the wood if frequent retightening is necessary?

I look forward to your advice or experiences on this topic.

Hi, usually it helps to secure the screws with a drop of wood glue. Alternatively, you can place small plastic washers underneath to prevent the handle from directly stressing the wood when pulled.

Hello Gasteffen, your description of the problem with the loose Hemnes handles applies to many people. Hemnes is often made of MDF panels with a lacquered or foil surface, which can wear out quickly when screws are repeatedly tightened.

The following detailed procedure might help:
- Loosen the screws
- Remove the handle
- Apply some wood glue or corrosion-resistant wooden dowels into the screw hole to stabilize it again
- Alternatively, press in round sanded wooden dowels or house fleece and let it harden
- Before reinserting the screws, optionally use a small washer to distribute pressure
- Tighten the screws with appropriate torque, avoiding over-tightening

If the hole is permanently damaged, it may be necessary to replace the drawer front or have it professionally repaired. What tools do you have available? Have you checked if the wobbling is caused by certain screws or by the material itself?

Sometimes, filling the hole with wood filler or putty helps, followed by pre-drilling with a small diameter drill bit to secure the handle again.

For additional information: The issue with loose drawer handles on IKEA Hemnes furniture is often due to the material used. The fronts are usually made of painted MDF, which can quickly lose its screw grip under higher stress.

To achieve a long-lasting solution:
- Avoid overtightening the screws to prevent damage to the material.
- Instead of the original screws, use special screws with a larger diameter or higher strength.
- For worn-out holes, repair them using wooden dowels or wood filler and allow them to dry completely before reattaching the handle.
- Washers help distribute pressure, improving the grip’s stability.

It is important to maintain a balance between a secure fit and preserving the material.

Hello Gasteffen, I completely understand how frustrating this issue is. From my experience, patience and a systematic approach are key.

First, I recommend removing the screws completely and inspecting the holes carefully. If the holes are already enlarged or damaged, you should fill them with wood filler and, after it dries, carefully re-drill with a thin drill bit.

A tip: you can also make small wooden dowels or wood-based inserts to glue into the holes, creating new, solid fixing points. For very soft MDF, using special threaded inserts that are installed into the hole can be worthwhile, as they prevent direct stress on the material from the screws.

Please tighten the screws with the appropriate torque—too tight causes damage, too loose results in wobbling.

Does anyone else have experience preserving the material in such MDF dressers? I’m happy to help.
