Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the task of assembling several Ikea Hemnes furniture pieces and would like to better understand their durability. Therefore, my question to the community is: What assembly tips have worked well for you to ensure that Hemnes furniture remains as stable and long-lasting as possible after assembly? I am especially interested in aspects such as tightening the screws, the correct order of assembly, possible additional fasteners, or maintenance tips that help prevent the furniture from wobbling, creaking, or becoming damaged over time.

Since Hemnes is known for being made of solid wood with a relatively simple construction design, I am particularly curious whether there are specific materials or tools you would recommend to enhance stability.

Thank you in advance for your experience and advice!

Hello TUFANRA,

I find your question very helpful because I have had quite some experience with Hemnes myself, and it’s true: sometimes after assembly, you’re not entirely sure if everything will hold up.

My advice: it’s important to tighten the screws only finger-tight at first and only fully tighten them at the end of the complete assembly. This helps avoid stress on the wood that could cause creaking later on.

Additionally, I found it useful to reinforce the back panels with small brackets, especially for large cabinets. I know this isn’t part of the standard Ikea instructions, but it provides extra stability even if you move the furniture just once.

How do others handle this?

The assembly method for Ikea Hemnes furniture is crucial for its durability. My recommendation:

- Tools: Using a cordless drill with a torque limiter prevents over-tightening the screws.
- Pre-drilling is usually not necessary, as the carcass wood is already precisely prepared.
- Tighten screws only until snug by hand, then once the entire piece is assembled, evenly retighten all connections.
- Always anchor the furniture to the wall, as Hemnes pieces are often quite tall and can be prone to tipping.
- For heavily loaded areas (feet, hinges), additional metal brackets or small washers are advisable to distribute the load.

These points take the material construction into account and help prevent common issues like wobbling or warping.

In addition to the previous tips:

When assembling the Hemnes series, it is important to handle the dowels carefully. Especially the wooden dowels should be inserted fully and not at an angle. Take your time to properly align each component before screwing it together.

Additionally, I have found it helpful not to put full weight on the furniture immediately after assembly, but to let it stand for 1-2 days to allow the wood to settle.

Regarding maintenance, avoid excessive moisture, and instead of direct sunlight, a shaded location is better. This helps prevent warping and cracks.

If you like, I can also provide you with a list of recommended tools and materials for the assembly.

Additionally:

- Apply wood glue inside the dowel holes for added stability.
- Use a small rubber mallet to tap the wooden dowels into place.
- Tighten all screws several times to prevent any wobbling.

Done.

Interesting thread.

However, I wonder whether the advice to use wood glue and additional brackets is really necessary, or if this goes beyond the original product specifications intended by Ikea.

While such modifications are understandable, they effectively alter the product, which may affect the warranty or service claims.

My suggestion: Perhaps more focus should be placed on careful handling and proper assembly rather than on additional reinforcements. Wouldn't it be more effective to closely follow the recommended steps in the included instructions and rely less on improvisation?
