Hello everyone, I plan to assemble the Ikea Hemnes bedroom furniture set and I’m wondering: which tools are especially helpful when putting together Ikea Hemnes? I’m not only asking about basic tools like screwdrivers but also any special aids or tips that can make the assembly easier or faster. I’m interested in experiences with the Ikea-supplied Allen key, as well as the use of cordless drills or possibly more unusual tools. Maybe you can also share advice on which tools are definitely unnecessary or which ones are essential to have on hand to make the process as smooth as possible. I’m looking forward to your specific recommendations and experiences!

Actually, a cordless drill with a hex bit and the Ikea hex key is usually sufficient. A rubber mallet can be helpful to avoid damaging the wood components. A spirit level is useful when assembling cabinets.

Why always rely on the same tools? I think people become too dependent on cordless screwdrivers and the like.

Interesting point you raise, but I was specifically curious about how these tools perform in practice. Of course, you can screw everything in by hand, but does anyone have experience with whether a cordless screwdriver really eases the workload during longer assemblies using the Hemnes set? Or does it tend to cause screws to be overtightened instead?

A ratchet can also help when space is tight.

Could you maybe explain in more detail where a ratchet is especially useful? Is it particularly helpful in tight areas of the furniture?

Regarding tools for assembling Ikea Hemnes furniture, I can add the following from a technical perspective: The cordless drill should definitely have adjustable torque because the screws used in the particleboard are sensitive, and overtightening can damage the material or cause the screws to pull out. Additionally, flat bits for the Phillips screws are very helpful for precise work.

Furthermore, I recommend not tightening the supplied dowels and fasteners too much – testing the load capacity by drilling a small test hole in a scrap piece is advisable. The rubber mallet should be soft enough; alternatively, a wooden centering hammer also works well.

For aligning the cabinets, a small spirit level or protractor is extremely useful, as Hemnes cabinets sometimes need to compensate for slight unevenness to close properly.

Due to often tight spaces when screwing, I also recommend flexible bits and, if necessary, extensions for the cordless drill to reach difficult areas.

Did you encounter any specific structural conditions that influenced your choice of tools?

I think it’s important to also mention the issue of fatigue: just the many screws in the Hemnes set can really be exhausting. That’s why I say a cordless screwdriver not only saves your hands but also helps keep motivation up when assembly gets tough. In the end, you want to see a finished result, not give up out of frustration. For example, I took breaks in between, but with the right tools, it was much easier to continue afterward.

That is an important point that is often overlooked. One should never just try to screw as quickly as possible but always keep material protection in mind. For furniture like Ikea’s Hemnes, the material thickness is not comparable to solid wood, which means that the choice of tools and careful handling make a big difference.

I would also like to disagree with GALEO4’s statement: In my opinion, the simplicity of the construction is not compromised but rather supported by using the right tools. After all, the goal is to assemble the furniture safely and accurately.

Have you had experiences where using too basic tools made the assembly take longer or even caused mistakes?
