Hello everyone,
I am currently planning the assembly of my Ikea Platsa wardrobe system and have a specific question regarding the back panels. As you may know, the back panels in Platsa are not rigid but rather flexible elements that can be fixed using different methods. Since I place great importance on a secure, durable, and as stable as possible attachment of the back panels (especially to prevent warping of the furniture), I am interested in which fastening methods you would recommend.
Specifically, I am interested in the following:
- Which screws, nails, or clamping techniques work best?
- Are there any tips for attaching the back panel so that it does not give way or sag under heavier loads (for example, when the shelves are fully packed)?
- How do you handle cases where the back panel is slightly smaller or serves only as decoration – is a different method advisable there?
I look forward to your detailed experiences or tips. Thank you in advance!

It is important not to install the back panel with excessive force, as this can cause the frame to warp.I agree with this, but I wonder if the standard back panels of Platsa—which are quite thin—are even stable enough under long-term load, even when installed carefully.
I would like to hear if anyone here has replaced the back panels with thicker boards (e.g., 6mm (1/4 inch) MDF) or even added additional reinforcements. Because small brackets alone are likely to have minimal effect on large, fully loaded systems.
Who has concrete experience or measurement data regarding the stability of PLATSA back panels with different fastening methods or material thickness? That could be helpful here to provide well-founded recommendations.

I actually replaced my PLATSA back panels myself with 4 mm (0.16 inches) plywood panels, which are much more stable and hardly warp. You notice the difference immediately! I carefully cut the panels to size and fastened them carefully with small screws.
Also, here’s my clear opinion: the standard panels are mostly decorative and only provide minimal stabilization. So if you need maximum stability, it’s definitely worth upgrading yourself.
In short: DIY back panels plus screws—that’s the perfect combination! :-)
