Hello everyone, I am considering using the Ikea Besta system as a small bookshelf since I have limited space but want an efficient and well-organized solution for my books. I am particularly interested in how to best combine the individual components, whether I should use any special inserts or additional materials, and what options are available to customize the shelf both visually and functionally to fit my room and my books. The question of how to ensure stability and good accessibility is also important to me. Does anyone have practical tips or experience on how to use the BESTA system effectively as a bookshelf and possibly improve it? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

I think it’s great that some good tips have already been shared here. At the beginning, I also had difficulties configuring the Besta to be stable and practical. The wall mounting was especially important to me since I have small children and didn’t want to risk any tipping hazards. Besides, I have books of different heights in my collection, so I didn’t use the shelves as fixed but adjusted them flexibly – this creates much better organization. I can totally understand your approach to the doors; I was initially worried the unit might look busy, but the doors actually give it a very neat appearance. If you like, Urilo, I can also recommend two versions: one minimalist in just white and one with small color accents through colorful doors – this adds character to the small room without overwhelming the style.

In this context, I recommend focusing on the modularity of the BESTA system. For example, combine different widths and heights to build a compact shelving unit that can accommodate both small paperbacks and large coffee table books. The use of shelves with adjustable heights is crucial. Additionally, inserts like shelf dividers and small boxes provide functional subdivisions, helping to keep things organized and preventing chaotic stacking. Visually, adapting the surface materials to your room works well—light colors make the space feel larger, while textured fronts blend nicely with the surroundings. Wall mounting is essential for safety and stability. Overall, careful planning of measurements and components before purchase is advisable to avoid later modifications.
