Hello everyone,

I am planning to use my Ikea Besta as storage, but I specifically want to accommodate large and bulky items. I am generally familiar with the Besta system, but the shelves are usually designed for smaller items. My question is therefore: How can I best modify or use Ikea Besta to store bulky things like larger boxes, books, or sports equipment without compromising stability or making it impractical? Are there any useful tips for assembly or interior organization that I should keep in mind? I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Hello REORA,

Your question is very relevant, as Ikea Besta is originally designed for smaller, modular storage. The main advantage lies in its modular construction and flexibility. Here are a few tips:
- For large items, I would recommend planning the main structure with fewer shelves, meaning leave out most of the shelves or install only a few.
- Loose shelves can be combined with larger, suitable boxes or baskets to help keep things organized.
- Important: Stability is gained by using a back panel and firmly screwing all side panels and inserts together.
- There are also larger Besta units, such as taller cabinets, which offer more volume and can be helpful for bulky items.

Important: Make sure not to exceed the maximum load capacity of the shelves, otherwise, the furniture piece may warp.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Hello REORA,

Your project can definitely be realized using Ikea Besta if you approach it systematically. Here is a structured overview:

- Planning: Measure your bulky items precisely so you can size your Besta units accurately.
- Flexibility: Leave out shelves to create taller compartments. You can also customize individual shelves by, for example, removing frame strips.
- Stability: Pay attention to the back panel, as it is crucial, especially when the compartments become larger. If necessary, you can attach a stronger back panel.
- Door options: For large items, you might want to skip doors to allow more space for tall objects and easier access.

Common mistakes:
- Installing too many shelves, which limits storage space.
- Not anchoring units properly, leading to instability.

In summary: Measure carefully, plan flexibly and securely, and choose suitable doors or open shelving according to your needs.

Good luck!

Simply remove the shelves and use only the side panels. This way, you have more height space for bulky items. Don’t forget to secure the back panel.

Yes, that’s a good start. Additionally, I would recommend using the door fronts only if they provide enough clearance. For very bulky items, a door can sometimes be an obstacle. Besta can also be used as an open shelving system, which has the advantage of offering more flexibility.

Hi REORA,

I completely understand the concern about bulky parts—I had the same issue with my Besta storage unit for camping gear. A small tip from me: see if you can add a modular interior from other Ikea systems, like the larger boxes from Samla or Trofast. They often fit perfectly into the Besta compartments and provide storage for bigger or unusual items.

Also, yes, leaving out the shelves really makes a difference—more space for stacking! And if you need the unit to be mobile, use strong casters—this adds flexibility without compromise.

Have fun with the remodeling!
