Hello everyone, I am considering using the Ikea Besta system as a small bookshelf since I have limited space but want an efficient and well-organized solution for my books. I am particularly interested in how to best combine the individual components, whether I should use any special inserts or additional materials, and what options are available to customize the shelf both visually and functionally to fit my room and my books. The question of how to ensure stability and good accessibility is also important to me. Does anyone have practical tips or experience on how to use the BESTA system effectively as a bookshelf and possibly improve it? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Hello Urilo, your concern is completely understandable, as the BESTA system, with its modular design, offers a very flexible solution for small bookshelves. First, I would recommend selecting the shelf compartments based on the size of your books – especially for tall books, the STANDARD BESTA units can sometimes be a bit too low, which means you may need to work with adjustable shelves. For additional stability, you can use metal brackets or extra boards for reinforcement. Using baskets or boxes that fit into the compartments also helps to organize small items or loose accessories. Visually, you can work with cabinet doors, which come in various designs, to focus attention on the books or create a neater appearance. Regarding stability, it is essential to ensure that the unit is securely fixed to the wall, especially if it is taller or heavily loaded. Another consideration is combining it with LED light strips so that the books are well lit and stylishly displayed, even in the evening. If you have more specific requirements or measurements, I’d be happy to offer more tailored advice.

I would recommend choosing the BESTA cabinets a bit deeper so that the books fit better. Additionally, you can use back panels to make the shelf more stable and at the same time prevent pins or stickers from sticking.

For effective use of Ikea BESTA as a small bookshelf, I recommend the following approach:
- Choose the correct depth (at least 30cm (12 inches)) for standard book sizes
- Use adjustable shelves to customize the height as needed
- Optional back panels made of sturdy materials for increased stability
- Wall mounting to prevent tipping hazards
- Use doors or flaps for privacy and dust protection
- Employ storage boxes or inserts to divide the compartments

The modular dimensions of the BESTA system (e.g. 60x40cm (24x16 inches) carcasses) also allow for linking or stacking multiple units to create more surface area. Be sure to check the maximum load capacity per shelf to avoid overloading.

I find that interesting. Do you have any advice on the best way to attach these LED strips to the BESTA without damaging the furniture? Should I pay special attention to the type of mounting? In general, I’m looking for a solution that is flexible and requires minimal effort to set up.

Very good question. For the BESTA system, I recommend self-adhesive LED strips that don’t require drilling. It’s best to choose ones with adhesive backing that can be removed cleanly without residue. Some adhesive tapes also offer slight removability. Attach the strips to the inner sides of the shelves or to the back panel—depending on the setup. If you want to change their position later, you can carefully peel them off. For even more flexibility, there are also battery-powered LED strips that don’t need cables and can be controlled by remote. If the installation is meant to be permanent and you don’t mind making small holes, small screw hooks or clips provide the most secure solution. But I understand that for flexibility, adhesive mounting is the best initial choice.
