Hello everyone,
I have been thinking about how to ideally use the IKEA Besta system for storage in the hallway. Hallways often have limited space, but keeping things organized here is especially important since shoes, jackets, bags, and other everyday items need to be stored quickly.
My main concern is how to use Besta in a way that provides enough storage while keeping the hallway from feeling cluttered. I’m also interested in which combinations of doors, drawers, or open compartments work best for storing things like keys, hats, or mail in a quick and organized manner.
Do you have any ideas for optimal space utilization, organization with Besta, or tips for adapting it to different hallway sizes? Also, how is the stability and load capacity of the system in an entrance area?
Looking forward to your suggestions!

Hello Dajan,
your topic is very practical. The Besta system is flexible, so I recommend:
- A combination of closed doors and drawers for shoes and bags
- Open compartments or small baskets on top for quick access to keys and mail
- Make sure to have secure wall mounting, especially if you store heavy items like shoes
It’s also worth considering raising the unit on legs to keep cleaning effort low. If your hallway is narrow, a low Besta module along the wall can create space without overcrowding.
I’m happy to suggest some organizing additions if you like.

Great idea, Dajan! Besta is really a classic that offers so much storage space and flexibility, right?! I love using the open compartments on top for quick-access items and the larger closed compartments below for shoes.
If you feel like trying it, use narrow baskets in the compartments – they help keep things organized and make unpacking a breeze! You'll see how much more welcoming the hallway becomes!

Raising the floor on legs is also worth considering to keep cleaning effort low. That’s an interesting point, thanks! What has been your experience with IKEA’s legs? Are they stable enough for a heavily used hallway, even if you occasionally step on them with wet boots?
Also, do you use standard inserts in the Besta compartments, or do you customize with boxes or containers? I’m also aiming for everything to be quick to tidy up and easy for guests to use themselves.
