CORNELIA6312 Dec 2022 08:12Hello everyone, I purchased the Ikea Besta system for my living room to make it as flexible as possible for changing uses. Specifically, I want to modify the shelving unit so that I can use open shelves, closed cabinets, drawers, or a combination of these depending on my needs—possibly also including components for media storage or space for work materials. It is important to me that the modification is modular and doesn’t require major carpentry work, so I can easily change the configuration over time. Are there any practical tips, recommendations for additional components, or modifications you know of for a flexible conversion of the Besta system? Thanks in advance!

SauDietmar12 Dec 2022 09:07Hello Cornelia, a modular renovation of the IKEA Besta system works best if approached systematically. Here is a brief guide:
- First, select the basic modules and possibly combine them at different heights or widths to create flexible areas.
- Then, add different types of doors (open, with glass doors, flaps) or drawers as needed.
- Use additional shelves to subdivide the compartments inside. They are removable and flexible.
- For media devices, I recommend back panels with ventilation holes or open modules.
- Finishing with trims and edge bands makes the renovation more visually appealing.
Common mistake: When combining different elements, pay attention to stability and secure them if necessary with screw connectors.

Hello Cornelia, I completely understand your idea, as I also use several Besta modules in different rooms. It is important that, with changing uses, you pay attention to simple plug connections and pre-drilled holes so you can quickly adjust or remove the shelves. The option to add casters is also helpful for moving the furniture flexibly when needed. It is also worth considering inserts or boxes made of plastic or fabric that you can simply place into the compartments to keep things organized and swap them quickly.

Marlenepa12 Dec 2022 11:44I have modified my Besta system so that I can easily swap cabinet doors and drawer inserts. In my case, I mounted the doors without fixed screws, using magnetic catches instead, making everything easy to remove. Additionally, I installed flexible cable grommets to securely accommodate media devices and allow for easy reconfiguration when needed.

CORNELIA6312 Dec 2022 12:22Thank you for your detailed tips! I am especially interested in the durability when frequently rearranging: How sturdy are the Besta units when the shelves are often changed or parts are removed? Are there specific connection methods you would recommend to ensure everything stays stable and secure during frequent modifications?
