Hello everyone, I am currently facing an issue with stubborn labels stuck firmly to the surface of my Ikea Besta furniture. Despite multiple attempts to peel them off, they barely come off. The labels are made of fairly strong adhesive paper, apparently fixed with a very durable glue. My question is: How can I gently remove these firmly stuck labels from the Ikea Besta surfaces without damaging the surface or leaving any residue? So far, I have tried soaking the labels with warm water and dish soap, but this had little effect. I would appreciate any advice on proven methods or specific products that work well on this type of Ikea furniture.
The adhesive on Ikea BESTA labels can indeed be very stubborn. It is important not to use aggressive substances on the surface to avoid any damage. Practically tested methods include: - Using isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), which usually softens the adhesive residue without affecting painted surfaces. Apply the alcohol with a soft cloth, let it sit briefly, and then gently wipe off. - Alternatively, pure cooking oil or baby oil can also work. Soak the labels with the oil and then remove them residue-free. Afterwards, clean the area with some dish soap and water to remove any oil residue. - If adhesive residues remain despite these methods, special adhesive removers based on citrus or solvents can be used; please test on an inconspicuous spot first. Important: Never use abrasive tools or sharp blades, as the BESTA surface is usually laminated or painted and can be easily damaged.
Hey, I’m very familiar with the problem of Ikea labels, so annoying! 😅 The adhesive residue that sticks around forever is the real culprit. What I’ve tried is using a hairdryer to warm the glue slightly and make it “softer.” Heat the labels a bit and then peel them off with your fingers or a soft cloth. This often helps because warm adhesive becomes more flexible. After that, apply a little olive oil or sunflower oil to the residue; this gently dissolves the leftover adhesive. Finally, wipe it clean with a damp cloth and mild dish soap. It’s a very gentle method, especially if you want to avoid harsh solvents. I find it much more relaxed than using alcohol or strong chemicals.

The adhesive on Ikea BESTA labels can indeed be very stubborn. That’s true, but I would generally doubt that standard isopropyl alcohol always leaves the surface unharmed. Laminated furniture like BESTA can react very differently to solvents depending on the finish, and discoloration cannot be ruled out.

I tried using a hairdryer to warm the adhesive a bit and make it “softer.” I see reasonable benefits here: heat can weaken the adhesive bond, but the temperature should not be set too high, as this could damage or deform the laminate.
Therefore, I would recommend first trying the heat method combined with careful mechanical removal. Only if that is not sufficient should milder oil-based substances be considered.
My principle is: use the least aggressive method necessary, keeping a wide margin to avoid surface damage. Any harsh cleaner or excessive alcohol can leave lasting marks, especially on white or light-colored surfaces.

I think the suggestion of using a hairdryer along with oil sounds reasonable. However, I’m not sure which oil is best suited for this. You mentioned olive oil and sunflower oil, but would it also be possible to use common baby oil products or even WD-40 instead?

Perhaps in relation to the specific surface of BESTA?
