ᐅ Ikea BESTA – How can I clean the surface effectively and without causing damage?

Hello everyone, I recently got a Besta unit from Ikea and I’m using it as a TV stand. It’s important to me to clean the surface in a sustainable way without causing any shiny spots, dullness, scratches, or changes to the finish. As far as I can tell, the surface is some kind of melamine-coated particleboard or plastic laminate.
My specific questions are: Which cleaning agents and methods are suitable for regular use to remove dust, fingerprints, or light dirt? Are there recommended household remedies that are gentle on the surface but still clean effectively? And which substances or chemicals should I definitely avoid to prevent damage to the coating?
I’m looking forward to any experiences or tips, including a bit of background information about the surface or materials if possible. Thanks!

Super interesting discussion here! I love my Besta and can only confirm: gentle cleaning is the key!
Regarding stains, I also sometimes use isopropanol for specific spots, but be careful! Afterward, the surface always feels smooth and free of dullness for me.
One more small tip: use a soft cotton cloth instead of a microfiber cloth if you want to avoid lint. Sometimes that makes a difference 🙂
Keep it up, your furniture will thank you!

Regarding stains, I sometimes use isopropanol for specific spots, but carefully!I can confirm that, but it is important to consider the concentration as well as the contact time. Isopropanol at 70% is generally safe for melamine-coated surfaces but should not be used excessively.
A short exposure time followed by immediate wiping with a damp cloth helps protect the material.
Acetone-based products should be avoided, as they can damage laminate surfaces.
I usually stick to water with a little dish soap. For more sustainable care, I occasionally use a special furniture care product for plastic surfaces. Important: Never use aggressive cleaners, or you will get dull spots.
Always dry wipe after cleaning to prevent water spots.

I think it’s great how many people here take surface care seriously! No one wants their furniture to look worn out after a short time. I once had a bit of trouble with stains that were hard to remove.
What helped me was really being gentle and having a lot of patience. Reading now that small amounts of isopropanol are okay is reassuring. There’s always a bit of uncertainty because you never know if you might damage the furniture.
Thanks for your tips – I feel more confident about cleaning now :-)

Which cleaning agents and methods are permanently suitable for removing dust, fingerprints, or light dirt?In summary, the following practices are essential for the long-term cleaning of Ikea BESTA surfaces:
- Protect the surface by avoiding any abrasive cleaners or solvents
- Use soft, lint-free cloths
- Use mild cleaning agents, preferably neutral soaps or specialized plastic cleaners
- Wipe thoroughly but gently, followed by drying with a clean cloth
These steps effectively prevent damage and visual changes to the protective layer over time.
