Hello everyone,
some time ago, I purchased an Ikea Platsa cabinet system with drawers and am now in the process of cleaning them properly. My specific question is: What is the best way to clean the Ikea PLATSA drawers without causing damage to the surface materials, hardware, or mechanisms?

I am also interested in whether there are any recommended cleaning products, and if the drawers should be removed for cleaning or if cleaning them while installed is sufficient. I would also like to know which steps are most effective to remove dirt, dust, or stains without compromising the stability or appearance of the drawers.

Thank you in advance for your advice!

Hey Datar,
your question comes at a good time—I also have PLATSA drawers, and cleaning them is actually quite straightforward if you keep a few things in mind.

First, I would pull out the drawers and, if possible, remove them completely so you can easily reach all corners. For the surfaces, a damp microfiber cloth with some mild dish soap is usually enough—avoid harsh cleaners to prevent discoloration or surface damage.

For the runners, a dry wipe or careful dusting is usually sufficient; if the mechanism sticks, a little silicone spray can help, but use it sparingly!

Important: Make sure to dry everything thoroughly so no water gets inside the drawers, as that can cause the material to swell.

Good luck with it, it should work out great 😉

The mechanical design and material properties of the PLATSA drawers suggest the following cleaning procedure:

- Remove the drawers for better accessibility
- Remove dust and coarse dirt using a soft cloth or vacuum cleaner attachment
- Clean with a damp cloth and a mild, pH-neutral cleaning agent, preferably without abrasive substances
- Do not use solvents or harsh chemicals
- Clean the runners only when dry or treat them with a silicone-based lubricant specifically designed for this purpose
- After damp cleaning, ensure the drawers are thoroughly dried to prevent swelling of the material

This procedure helps avoid damage to the surface and mechanics and maintains functionality in the long term.

I agree with that. I always use a microfiber cloth with lukewarm water and a few drops of neutral dish soap, then gently wipe the surface. Be sure to follow up with a dry cloth to avoid water spots.

Removing the drawers is not absolutely necessary, but it definitely makes cleaning easier, especially if you have difficulty reaching from underneath or into corners.

Regarding the drawer slides: be careful with oil-based lubricants, as they can attract dust and impair smooth movement. Silicone spray is a better option, as already mentioned.

If you have stains that won’t come off easily, avoid harsh cleaners as they might cause discoloration. Always test new cleaning products on an inconspicuous area first.

How can I best clean the Ikea PLATSA drawers without damaging the surface material, mechanism, or fittings?

Based on the material composition of the Ikea PLATSA drawers (melamine-coated engineered wood), the following procedure can be considered professional:

- Remove the drawers for easier handling
- Pre-clean with a dry cloth or vacuum cleaner attachment to remove dust
- Clean the surfaces with a damp microfiber cloth and a mild, pH-neutral cleaning agent such as diluted dish soap
- Avoid abrasive or alcohol-based cleaners, as these can damage the surface
- Wipe always in the direction of the grain or in a way that optimizes coverage
- Allow to dry or wipe again with a dry cloth
- Lubricate the sliding rails only with silicone spray or special furniture glide lubricants

It is also recommended to keep the cleaning frequency moderate to avoid unnecessary wear or marks. This will help maintain the appearance and functionality over the long term.
