Hello everyone, I have the IKEA Brimnes chest of drawers, and I noticed that the drawers don’t slide very smoothly. They sometimes catch or don’t glide easily, which is especially annoying when they are fully loaded. My question is: How can I make the IKEA Brimnes drawers operate more smoothly? I am looking for practical solutions, preferably without damaging or replacing any mechanical parts, as I want to keep the piece as original as possible. Are there specific lubricants, technical tips, or assembly adjustments that could help? Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!
Hello, I would like to add something because sometimes simply lubricating is not enough. First, it is important to check the rails and rollers or ball bearings for dirt or damage. Drawers can sometimes stick because dust, fibers, or small foreign objects get stuck in the guide rails. Clean the tracks thoroughly with a dry cloth and, if necessary, with some isopropanol to remove old dirt. Then lubricate the moving parts with a silicone-based lubricant. Be careful not to get any on the wood, as lubricants can leave stains there. If the drawer is still sticking, check the alignment of the drawer and the correct installation of the slides – even a slight misalignment can cause resistance.
In summary, I recommend the following procedure for the Brimnes drawer:
- Completely remove the drawer and inspect the runners for dirt and damage.
- Clean the runners and ball bearings (if present) with isopropanol.
- Apply a thin layer of silicone spray or graphite powder; avoid corrosive or oily substances.
- Check the screws on the runners and, if necessary, gently tighten them to prevent play and misalignment.
- When reinserting the drawer, guide it carefully and ensure it slides straight into the runners. Once properly adjusted, the drawer will operate much more smoothly.
Since the Brimnes model has a relatively simple design, it can also help to lightly deburr the runners with fine sandpaper if you notice any burrs or typical manufacturing irregularities.

Thanks for the helpful tips so far! For your information: the drawers appear to be completely intact, but I haven’t checked yet whether they are clean and dust-free. I will definitely try the silicone spray. What’s still unclear, though: can you tell me if it’s possible to detach and remove the runners from the Brimnes to clean and lubricate them more easily? Or is it better to clean and maintain them while they are still installed?
