Good morning everyone, I am currently preparing to service my IKEA Besta drawers and would prefer to do it myself to prevent future wear and tear. My question is: which tools are really necessary to properly and thoroughly maintain them?
It is important to me not to start out with too many or too few tools and to avoid forgetting any special tools. These are common models with metal runners and soft-close mechanisms. Which tools should I definitely have ready to tighten screws, adjust the runners, clean the sliding elements, or possibly lubricate them?
Who has practical experience and can provide a comprehensive and well-structured list with explanations? Thank you!

One more question for the group:
Has anyone had experience adjusting drawers, especially when the slides no longer engage smoothly or get stuck?
Do you need any special adjustment pins or similar tools for this?
And what about lubricating—do you really need to detach each drawer slide, or is it enough to apply lubricant where the slides are visible?
What is the best way to maintain the system without fully dismantling the entire drawer setup?

Does anyone have experience with adjusting drawers, especially when the slides no longer click cleanly or get stuck? This is a common maintenance issue. All IKEA Besta models with metal slides have a screw for fine adjustment, usually located at the rear end of the slide or on the drawer itself.
For this:
- Use a medium-sized Phillips screwdriver.
- Turn the screw slowly to adjust the drawer’s height or sideways alignment.

And what about lubricating—should you really disassemble each slide, or is it enough to apply lubricant where it’s visible?Disassembling the slides is not absolutely necessary if you have access to the internal parts. Spray lubricant on the moving parts, then open and close the drawer several times to distribute the oil.
This way you avoid unnecessary effort and potential damage.
Summary:
- Bring a screwdriver
- Use silicone spray
- Don’t use too much lubricant to prevent dust buildup.

Regarding the removal tool for front panels: IKEA often uses plastic clips, so check carefully before disassembly to avoid any breakage.

A quick question regarding oiling: I’ve read that oil on sliding surfaces in furniture often attracts dust, which can lead to faster wear. Drawer slides are metal on metal. Is silicone spray actually effective here, or are there better alternatives for the drawer runners in BESTA?
How do you handle this in practice, especially when the drawers have become rather quiet but stiff? Should cleaning (dust, particles) always be done before lubricating?
I appreciate any tips on the best products and procedures.

For example, a lubricant containing PTFE is also good, as it provides long-lasting lubrication on metal surfaces without becoming sticky.

Should cleaning (dust, particles) always be done before lubricating?Absolutely, a clean surface is essential. The best approach:
- Remove the drawer
- Clean the track with a microfiber cloth slightly dampened
- Use compressed air for tight spots if needed
- Then apply lubricant and cycle the drawer several times
If the movement is very stiff, the damping mechanism could also be slightly dirty or faulty, and cleaning often helps a lot.
Feel free to make a maintenance day out of it.

Absolutely, a clean surface is essential. That is true, but I would add that the lubricant should be applied carefully. Too much lubrication often causes buildup and can actually increase wear.
Also: How sustainable is maintenance if the load from overly heavy or overfilled drawers remains high? Should checking the load limits of IKEA BESTA drawers not also be part of maintenance?
Does anyone have experience with this? Should the maintenance check include verifying the maximum load capacity of the drawers themselves?
