Good morning everyone, I am currently preparing to service my IKEA Besta drawers and would prefer to do it myself to prevent future wear and tear. My question is: which tools are really necessary to properly and thoroughly maintain them?
It is important to me not to start out with too many or too few tools and to avoid forgetting any special tools. These are common models with metal runners and soft-close mechanisms. Which tools should I definitely have ready to tighten screws, adjust the runners, clean the sliding elements, or possibly lubricate them?
Who has practical experience and can provide a comprehensive and well-structured list with explanations? Thank you!

Is checking the load limits of IKEA BESTA also part of the maintenance?Yes, that is important. According to IKEA, the drawers can usually hold up to about 15 kg (33 lbs), with some models able to handle slightly more.
If the drawer is too full or too heavy, wear increases, and adjustments will soon become ineffective again.
Therefore, it is always worth checking the weight during maintenance and reducing any overload if necessary.
In summary: maintenance = mechanical adjustments + cleaning + photo/weight inspection + lubrication.

One last question from me: Are there specific torque settings for screws when maintaining drawers that should be observed?
I mean, some screws in furniture can be damaged if tightened too much, while others may not be secure enough and loosen again if not tightened sufficiently.
What is the best approach to avoid damage caused by incorrect use of tools?

There are usually no official torque specifications for the screws used in IKEA Besta drawers, as the furniture is made from relatively soft wood or particleboard.
My advice: tighten the screws firmly by hand, then give them about half a turn more with the screwdriver.
Over-tightening can cause the material to split, while under-tightening makes the assembly unstable.

Great question! I recently serviced my BESTA drawers myself and can definitely confirm: screw carefully and with a gentle touch! If you hear a click, it’s usually enough.
And don’t forget: when adjusting the drawer slides, proceed in small steps and check how the drawer moves.
Good luck, you’ll definitely manage it! 🙂
