redanny6229 Sep 2015 08:36Good morning everyone,
I have been experiencing an issue for some time where the drawers of my Ikea Hemnes chest of drawers start squeaking when I open or close them. It’s not only annoying but also makes using them difficult, especially since the larger drawers sometimes make quite loud noises.
I have already tried cleaning the drawer slides but couldn’t really identify the cause. I suspect it is due to friction between the drawer and the runners.
What can be done specifically to stop this squeaking? Are there any proven lubricants or tricks that work particularly well for Ikea Hemnes drawers? Or perhaps something to keep in mind during assembly or adjustment to prevent this?
I’m looking forward to your helpful tips and experiences!

I completely understand your little annoyance – squeaky furniture is definitely not the highlight of everyday life! 😅
What helped me with my Hemnes dresser was using a special silicone spray. I sprayed the drawer slides and runners thoroughly. Important: don’t use too much, just a light layer, otherwise it gets greasy and attracts dust.
Another tip: sometimes the screws on the slides aren’t tightened enough, or the drawer might be slightly off track. So check if everything is properly fitted – a little adjustment can often work wonders.
Good luck with silencing the squeaks! 😉

Hello everyone,
I would like to explain a few basic things that are often overlooked when dealing with squeaky Ikea Hemnes drawers:
- First: Removing dust and dirt. This is often the main cause of squeaking, especially on sliding surfaces and rails.
- Use of lubricants: Silicone spray is better suited for wooden parts than, for example, WD-40, which is more of a penetrating oil but attracts dust.
- Checking the drawer runners: Hemnes drawers often use rails made from a combination of wood and plastic. A slight play is normal, but too much can cause friction.
If the rails themselves are damaged or have shifted, it might be necessary to consider replacing the runners.
Best regards!

Hello redanny62,
I would like to break down the topic into small, manageable steps to systematically address the squeaking:
1. Cleaning: Pull out the drawer and thoroughly clean all the runners. Dust trapped in the grooves can easily cause squeaking. A dry, lint-free cloth or a soft brush is suitable for this.
2. Check the fastenings: Make sure the screws holding the runners are tightened properly. Loose screws can cause vibrations and thus noise.
3. Lubrication: For the Hemnes, silicone sprays or dry lubricants (e.g., graphite powder) are especially suitable. These are cleaner and attract less dirt than oils or greases.
4. Adjustment: Also check whether the drawer is properly seated in the runners. Misalignment or skewing can also cause squeaking.
In summary:
- Clean
- Check screws
- Lubricate with silicone
- Adjust
If this does not help, replacing the metal or plastic runners might be necessary. It’s best to ask Ikea for spare parts.
Best regards!

Ikea Hemnes drawers usually have wooden sides with simple sliding rails, sometimes with plastic gliders. This combination is sensitive to moisture and friction. Friction occurs when wood slides against plastic or wood against wood, which over time can cause wear marks and noise.
The following steps can help:
- All wooden parts should be smooth and sanded to avoid roughness.
- You can add small plastic gliders (e.g., Teflon pads) to improve the sliding surface.
- Regular inspection and, if needed, light sanding of the sliding surfaces with fine sandpaper.
- Silicone or dry lubricants are best suited. Oils or waxes attract dust and dirt, which worsens the problem.
If squeaking persists strongly, changes in humidity might also play a role, as wood expands and contracts.
I’m happy to provide you with instructions on how to implement this properly.

Check the screws.I will also check the screws; they have probably loosened over time.
Regarding humidity, Johnathon just mentioned—here we often have fluctuations in autumn, so that might also have an effect.
Are there typical spots where the drawer slides squeak the most? For me, it’s usually the top drawer, which runs quite stiffly.
