Hello everyone,
I have been having an issue for some time now where the drawers of my IKEA Malm dresser no longer close properly. More specifically, when I push the drawer all the way in, it doesn’t sit flush with the main body and remains slightly ajar. This happens with all three drawers.
I have already checked if something is stuck or if the rails are bent, but I couldn’t find anything unusual. It feels like the drawer slides are not locking in properly or that some adjustment is missing.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem? What simple repair options are there to get the drawers to close tightly again? I would appreciate any tips, including advice on spare parts or necessary tools.
Thanks!

The issue with the Malm drawers is quite common, especially if the runners are dirty or slightly bent. I would first recommend thoroughly cleaning the tracks and checking the plastic inserts to make sure they are still properly positioned. Sometimes sandy dust or small stones can cause the drawer to stick.
You should also check if the drawer runners are aligned parallel to the dresser. Small misalignments can easily cause problems when closing. In some cases, you can slightly adjust the runner by loosening the screws and realigning it.
If the plastic stoppers or locking mechanism are worn out, it’s worth checking with IKEA for available replacement parts. Some users have had good results with self-adhesive dampers that help improve the closing action.
Best regards!

Hello Gapufar,
I’m happy to help with a brief troubleshooting guide for Malm drawers that don’t close properly:
1. Remove the drawer and carefully inspect the runner rails: Check for any deformation, crooked installation, or dirt.
2. Check the plastic glides: Malm drawers often have small glides that can be worn out or displaced.
3. Use a spirit level to check the dresser: Is the dresser possibly standing unevenly, which could cause the mechanism to not function smoothly?
4. Inspect the mounting screws: Even if the rails look correctly installed, loose screws can cause the drawer to wobble in the runners and prevent it from closing properly.
5. Adjust and test: Loosen the rails slightly, push the drawer into the correct position, and then tighten the screws again.
In summary: The problem is often caused by small issues like loose screws, uneven installation, or shifted glides. Using silicone spray on the runner rails to improve sliding can also be helpful, but apply it carefully.
If none of this works, a repair with replacement parts might be necessary – IKEA offers replacement glides and runner rails that are easy to swap out.
Good luck!

Hello everyone,
I would like to add that the weight of the drawer is important for Malm dressers. If the drawer is too heavily loaded, it can cause it to sag and not close properly.
A sticking or warped back panel can also affect the dresser’s stability and, therefore, the function of the drawers. Check if everything is aligned correctly.
If you want to take a hands-on approach: often, you can slightly adjust the drawer slides with a small screwdriver to create the right tension. Be careful, but with a gentle touch, it usually works well.
Good luck!

Hey Gapufar 🙂
This sounds like a classic case of a “stuck drawer”: the drawer doesn’t slide smoothly along the runners. I’ve had the same issue before. Sometimes there’s just a tiny piece of wood or paper caught in the runner, or the runner itself may have become slightly warped.
What really helps is to take the drawer out completely, clean the runner from dust, and apply some lubricant (I always use a special glide lubricant, not oil!). Then carefully put the drawer back in and gently slide it in and out.
Sometimes the simple trick of slightly lifting the drawer when pushing it in can prevent it from sticking. It sounds easy but often solves the problem.
Keep at it, you’ll get it sorted! 😉
