Hello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA Platsa system and now want to secure it firmly on carpeted flooring. Since carpets are usually soft and flexible, I’m wondering what the best way is to fix the modules so they don’t slip or wobble when opening the doors or loading them. Does anyone have experience with particularly secure methods for fixing furniture on carpet? I’m interested in whether special floor clamps, adhesive strips, or maybe a combination of anchors and anti-slip mats would be effective. Also, I’d like to know if there are any precautions to take during installation to avoid damaging the carpet in case the furniture needs to be moved later. Thanks in advance for specific tips, preferably with suggestions for tools or materials!

I would recommend placing anti-slip pads under the legs. This will prevent the furniture from sliding easily on the carpet. Additionally, if possible, you can secure the corners to the wall using small brackets.

Very interesting question, Colby8. Stability is a real challenge when dealing with carpeted floors, as regular anchors or screws cannot be used directly on the floor. I recommend the following step-by-step approach:

- First, place a non-slip underlay (e.g., special rubber or felt pads) beneath the PLATSA modules. This will prevent lateral slipping.

- The mounting brackets provided by IKEA for wall attachment should definitely be used. It’s best to screw the furniture to the wall to avoid wobbling.

- Alternatively, larger wooden panels can be used as a base, resting on the carpet and serving as a platform for mounting the PLATSA. This panel can then be secured to the wall.

- Important to note: Rigid attachment to the carpet may limit the usability of the carpet underneath – pressure marks can occur if the furniture is repositioned later.

How thick is your carpet? And is it a needlefelt or a carpet with a high pile? This does make a difference when securing the furniture.

The carpet is about 10 mm (0.4 inches) thick, a relatively dense needle felt, not a very soft high-pile. It is important to me that the construction does not become unstable later and that I don’t leave large holes or damage. Subfloor panels are only an option for me if they are truly the best solution. Are there fastening methods that can be applied directly on the carpet without an additional wooden substructure? And how about adhesive pads or double-sided mounting tape in these circumstances?

For securing IKEA PLATSA units on carpeted floors, I recommend the following coordinated approach:

- Use narrow anti-slip rubber mats or felt pads under the legs to significantly reduce the risk of slipping.
- Always anchor the modules to the wall using the designated brackets and screws to prevent lateral tipping. Appropriate wall anchors are necessary if the wall materials allow.
- Double-sided mounting tape is only partially suitable. It holds temporarily but can quickly lose adhesion under weight and movement, especially on carpet as a base.

Important: Make sure not to create permanent holes in the carpet during installation. Alternatively, small felt pads can be placed under the furniture legs to prevent pressure marks.

This recommendation is based on the physical properties of carpet flooring and the attachment options of the PLATSA system.

I would like to go into more detail about possible solutions. From my experience, the biggest issue with carpet flooring is that it does not allow a secure anchoring to the floor, which can cause the entire structure to become unstable. Our approaches were:

- Using non-slip mats: These can increase friction, but they do not provide a permanent fix.

- Attaching to the wall with brackets: This is the most important factor for stability and, in my opinion, essential.

- Avoiding subfloor panels and instead using furniture pads to reduce pressure marks.

I also recommend cushioning the area between the furniture and the wall with thin foam or rubber before securing it with screws, to better distribute the weight of the furniture.

Finally, a tip: before final installation, make sure to check that the wall is strong enough and that the wall plugs are suitable for the material.

If possible, mounting the PLATSA on a hard floor (e.g., with an underlay) and placing the carpet on top would also be a good alternative.
