Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I purchased IKEA Pax sliding doors and enjoy their modern look as well as the space-saving function. Unfortunately, I have noticed that after some use, the doors start to "sag" — that is, they no longer open and close as smoothly as they did in the beginning. Sometimes they rub slightly or even get stuck a little.

I suspect that either the tracks or the rollers might be worn out, but it could also be that the door alignment is not optimal. My question to the community is: How can I specifically prevent the Pax doors from sagging over time? What are the most common causes of this issue, and how can one proactively address it? Are there any special maintenance accessories or adjustment tips I should keep in mind?

I look forward to helpful, preferably technical explanations, as I want to avoid bigger problems early on and keep the doors in good condition over the long term.

Hello fuiskand40,

Regarding your question about how to prevent PAX sliding doors from sticking over time, I would like to explain some technical details and possible solutions.

First, it is important to know that the PAX doors operate on a roller system, which is subject to certain stresses and dirt buildup. Common causes for sticking include:

- Dirt in the tracks (dust, lint, or hair) can block or slow down the rollers.
- Worn or uneven rollers, which reduce smooth operation.
- Misalignment of the doors, for example if they are no longer exactly parallel or properly leveled.
- Possible moisture or extreme temperature changes that cause material expansion, leading to rubbing or sticking.

What you can specifically do to prevent this:

1. Regularly clean the tracks using a vacuum cleaner or a dry cloth to remove debris.
2. Check the rollers: sometimes they can be easily replaced or adjusted (not all rollers last forever).
3. Measure and readjust the door height and alignment using the included adjustment tool. IKEA provides instructions for this, which are often underestimated.
4. Avoid overloading the doors (e.g., hanging items that are too heavy), as this puts extra strain on the mechanism.

I also recommend carefully checking whether the tracks are bent, which can happen due to improper installation or excessive load.

One more question: Have the problems gradually worsened over time or appeared suddenly? Have you ever readjusted the doors since purchase?

The exact answer depends somewhat on the model and individual use, but these steps usually help a lot.

Oh yes, that’s happened to me too! Especially cat hair or dust bunnies collect in the track faster than you’d expect – and then it suddenly squeaks or sticks. The best thing is to regularly clean it with a small brush or vacuum to keep the rollers running smoothly.

Here’s a little insider tip: For some PAX models, you can easily find replacement rollers at a hardware store or online if one breaks. Then everything runs smoothly again, and it’s not a big hassle.

Also: Don’t hang too much weight on the doors! I once had a DIY bag hanging on mine, which really stressed the rollers – I removed it and haven’t had any problems since.

So: Regular maintenance, keep an eye and ear out, and your doors will glide like new again! 😉

Hello fuiskand40 and all interested,

I would like to present the topic in a more structured way and introduce a simple maintenance plan that helps prevent PAX sliding doors from sticking over time.

1. Cleaning the tracks
- Use a soft, dry cloth and/or vacuum cleaner to remove dirt from the guide rails.
- For stubborn dirt, a damp cloth can help; please make sure to dry thoroughly afterward.

2. Inspecting and lubricating the rollers
- The rollers should not be greasy, but if they feel dry, a suitable PTFE spray lubricant (no oil!) is recommended. This facilitates smooth operation without leaving sticky residues.
- Make sure the rollers show no visible wear or cracks; replace any damaged rollers.

3. Adjusting the doors
- PAX doors are usually height-adjustable, using the provided screws or adjustment keys.
- It is important to ensure the doors are parallel and perpendicular to the cabinet frame so that the load is evenly distributed.

4. Load distribution
- Avoid attaching additional weight to the doors that exceeds normal use (e.g., heavy handbags).

5. Checking installation quality
- Doors often stick if the tracks were not installed properly or have loosened over time.

Conclusion: A simple maintenance check about every 6 months protects the mechanism from premature wear.

Does anyone have specific questions about adjustment or suitable lubrication? I’m happy to help.

Before adjusting the doors, carefully inspect the tracks and clean them thoroughly.

Remove dust, hair, and lint.

If the rollers are damaged, replace them.

Then adjust the height of the doors using the screw mechanism – this will ensure smooth operation again.
