Hello everyone, I am currently looking into how to best optimize the cleaning of my IKEA Metod wooden kitchen countertops. Although the countertops are quite sturdy, since they are made of wood, I definitely want to avoid damaging the surface or affecting the protective layer. At the moment, I mostly use warm water and a mild dish soap, but I am wondering if there are more specialized cleaning products or methods that are better suited to both remove stains and protect the surface while extending durability. I am also interested in any specific care instructions for regular cleaning to prevent the wood from drying out or discoloring. Does anyone have practical experience, tips, or advice on common mistakes to avoid during cleaning? Thanks in advance!

Your approach with mild dish soap and water is generally reasonable, but there are various types of wood and surface finishes used in IKEA Metod kitchens that require different care.

However, I wonder how certain you are that your countertop is actually unfinished wood or just a wood-look surface. In my experience, many Metod kitchen countertops have a special sealant that excludes conventional wood treatment methods.

If that is the case, a too aggressive cleaner could damage the protective layer, leading to irreversible visible damage. Having a confirmation or official information about the specific type of countertop would be a helpful basis for recommendations here.

What kind of stains are you dealing with exactly? Just water stains, oil, or also food residues with colorants? That strongly influences the choice of cleaning agents.

Thanks, that’s a good point: My countertop is a solid wood slab (it’s an IKEA Metod with an oak wood countertop, oiled). So the wood is natural, but oiled, not lacquered or sealed with plastic.

Typical stains are water marks, occasional oil stains from cooking, and sometimes tea or coffee stains.

I want to avoid the oil layer wearing out too quickly or the wood drying out and developing cracks. Therefore, I’m interested in special cleaning methods that are gentle on the surface but still remove dried-in stains.

For oiled wooden countertops, like your Metod oak countertop, optimizing cleaning and maintenance is something that can be well managed with a clear routine.

Here is a brief guide to help improve your cleaning:

- Clean regularly with a damp cloth and warm water, using dish soap sparingly and only mild detergents.
- Avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners, as they can remove the oil and damage the wood.
- For tougher stains, gently rub with fine steel wool (#0000), but only if truly necessary.
- After cleaning, regularly re-oil the entire surface (e.g., with linseed oil or special maintenance oils for kitchen countertops) to maintain the protective layer.
- Avoid standing water on the surface, as the wood can absorb moisture and swell.
- Once a year, sand the countertop and re-oil it for optimal durability.

This way, you protect the countertop while still effectively removing stains.

Use warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap, then wipe dry immediately.

Renew the oil regularly, at least every few months.

Do not use harsh cleaners or abrasive products.

To truly optimize cleaning, it is important to understand the condition of the oil layer. This acts as a hydrophobic barrier that protects the wood from moisture and stains.

I recommend the following approach:

- First, avoid using abrasive or alkaline cleaning methods and materials, as these can damage the oil layer.

- For light stains, a damp cotton cloth with pH-neutral soap (pH around 7) is often sufficient.

- For grease or oil stains, you can gently remove them with a natural-based solvent like turpentine substitute, but apply it sparingly and only to the affected area.

- Very important: after each cleaning, be sure to thoroughly dry the surface to prevent water stains.

- For stubborn discolorations or minor scratches, a very fine sanding with 240 grit is recommended, followed by refreshing the surface with a high-quality maintenance oil, preferably designed specifically for oiled kitchen countertops.

- Make sure to apply the oil thinly and evenly, allowing it to penetrate well into the wood. Wipe off any excess oil after about 15 minutes to avoid a sticky surface.

- Finally: each wood type absorbs oil differently. With oak, the maintenance intervals are somewhat longer due to its harder structure, which is ideal for kitchen countertops.

If you like, I can also provide manufacturer details and product recommendations to help you choose the right cleaning and maintenance products with confidence.
