ivenfuHello everyone,
Some time ago, I bought an Ikea Hemnes wardrobe, which is known to have a painted pine wood surface. Now, I want to find the best and gentlest way to clean this wardrobe without damaging the finish.
I am aware that harsh cleaners or too much moisture can cause damage, so I am looking for a detailed guide or tips on how to properly care for and clean a Hemnes piece of furniture.
Does anyone have experience with suitable cleaning products, recommended cleaning frequency, or special techniques that I should keep in mind?
Thank you for any helpful advice!

briefly and clearly: Use only a damp (not wet) cloth, preferably a microfiber cloth.
No harsh cleaning agents or abrasive materials; mild dish soap is acceptable. Afterwards, wipe down with a dry cloth.
This way you avoid scratches and swelling.

Hello ivenfu,
I’m happy to take some time to explain this in more detail, as the Hemnes series actually uses lacquered solid wood, which requires special care when cleaning.
Basically, you should keep the following in mind:
- Use a soft cloth, preferably a microfiber cloth, to gently remove dust and dirt.
- For cleaning, a mild solution of warm water and a few drops of a pH-neutral dish soap works well. The cloth should be only slightly damp—never wet—because standing moisture can penetrate the pores and cause the wood to swell.
- Avoid abrasive sponges or chemically aggressive cleaners like alcohol, ammonia, or paint thinner, as these can damage the lacquer and cause it to become dull.
- After wiping with the damp cloth, be sure to polish the surface with a dry cloth to remove any remaining moisture.
Additionally, every six months or so, you can apply a special care product for lacquered wood, such as a suitable furniture wax or wood care oil, which protects the surface and maintains its shine. It is really important that the product is explicitly labeled for lacquered surfaces!
My question: What kinds of stains or dirt have you noticed so far on the Hemnes? This helps, as some spots may require special treatment.

If there’s something oily or sticky, I use lukewarm water with a drop of mild dish soap on a well-wrung cloth, then wipe dry quickly afterward.
And honestly? If you really love your Hemnes, treat the cabinet to a little care with furniture balm every few months—just not too much.
That keeps the wood healthy and your cabinet happy 🎉!
Hello ivenfu,
I would like to add a practical perspective to your request for a gentle cleaning method.
First of all: It is important to test the cleaner on an inconspicuous spot, for example on the back of a door, so you can immediately see if the product is compatible.
For cleaning, I recommend:
- Regularly dust your Hemnes furniture with an antistatic cloth to prevent dust particles from scratching the surfaces.
- For stubborn stains, you can dilute vinegar essence strongly (e.g., 1 part vinegar essence to 10 parts water), but please use it very carefully and wipe off immediately, as vinegar can damage the finish if left on too long.
- Avoid soaking with water or wiping with wet sponges to prevent the wood or lacquer protection from softening.
Important:
If you have children or pets who might cause accidents, prompt removal of liquids and crumbs helps even when you clean only with a dry cloth.
Cleaning is not difficult but requires a sensitive balance between moisture and gentle handling. If you have further questions or specific stains you want to describe in detail, I’m happy to help.

For this kind of thing, I always go for a gentle cleaning routine: dust dry, spot-clean with a barely damp cloth, then quickly wipe dry again—like the professional dancers of furniture cleaning 😅.
Additionally, I find that a wood care product based on wax or oil (suitable for lacquered surfaces) keeps the Hemnes looking fresh. But please don’t rub too hard, as that can actually dull the lacquer finish.
And very important: avoid anything that smells like nail polish remover or alcohol—those are a death sentence for the Hemnes lacquer.
Overall, I believe that with a careful, gentle, and regular maintenance routine, your cabinet will stay safe and in good shape.
