I recently received an IKEA Hemnes wardrobe, and unfortunately, I noticed some damage to the edges during unpacking and assembly. The damage includes surface scratches as well as small cracks and dents on the wood edges.
Since I would like to keep the wardrobe, I am wondering how to best repair or conceal these typical edge damages without having to replace the entire piece.
Do you have experience with suitable products or techniques to carry out a visually appealing and durable repair on the rather delicate edges of the Hemnes wardrobe?
Tips on recommended products (such as special wood fillers, touch-up markers, repair kits) would also be appreciated, as well as advice on whether it’s better to seek professional help or if it can be done well as a DIY project.
Thank you in advance for your support!

If the damage is more extensive, wood filler can be used, followed by sanding again and painting.

Since I would like to keep the cabinet, I’m wondering what the best way is to repair or conceal typical edge damage like this without having to replace the entire piece right away. That’s a valid consideration. However, before looking into repair products, the question arises: How severe is the damage really?
Depending on the extent, a professional repair could potentially be more costly and complex than replacing the damaged part. It would be useful to know whether the damage affects functionality or is purely cosmetic.
Also, how old is the cabinet, and were the edges damaged during transport or already at the store? For a lasting solution, a thorough understanding of the cause of the damage is important.
Hey benedicton, don’t worry, we’ll manage this! :-) I recently had a similar issue with my HEMNES, and wax crayons and wood repair kits really work well, especially if you’re careful and patient.
Sometimes, just treating the edges with a little wood oil or wood care product can help refresh the appearance. Just keep at it, you’ve got this!
If you want, feel free to reach out anytime—I’d be happy to share some tips on the exact steps!

Hello benedicton,
I would like to elaborate a bit more, as the topic of “edge damage on the HEMNES wardrobe” requires some care.
1. First, you should carefully inspect the affected edges and assess how deep and extensive the damage is. Often, only superficial scuffs can be fixed with wax sticks or furniture polish.
2. For smaller cracks or dents, a suitable wood filler is important. Make sure the filler matches the wardrobe material (usually MDF or veneered wood).
3. Then, it’s advisable to lightly sand the area to create a smooth surface. Make sure to protect yourself from dust!
4. Matching the color is the challenging part here. IKEA colors are not always exactly reproducible. Furniture markers can help but may differ slightly. It often helps to test on a small sample or trial area first.
5. For a long-lasting solution, matt clear varnishes can be applied over the repaired spot to protect the surface from further wear.
6. If the damage is larger, you might also consider replacing trim or attaching new edge strips – but this is more labor-intensive.
I hope this structured approach helps you!
