Hello everyone, I am planning to convert my Ikea Besta media cabinets into an open shelving unit and wanted to ask for advice on the best approach. Specifically, I want to completely remove the back panels to create an open look and possibly add extra shelves without compromising stability. Has anyone had experience converting a Besta unit into an open shelving system? What materials work best, and how can I make the whole thing safe and visually appealing? I would appreciate any tips and tricks you can share!

For wall mounting, I recommend heavy-duty brackets, preferably installed near the top of the back panel. If visible, they can be concealed with small trims, or you can use hidden fastening systems, such as recessed screws with cover caps. Regarding the spacing of the shelves: a standard distance of 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) is practical for mixed use with books and decorative items. The spacing can also be adjusted to accommodate taller objects.

I would additionally recommend replacing the small metal brackets from Ikea, which are used as shelf supports, with stronger versions. This ensures the shelves stay securely in place, especially without a back panel.

Good point, thanks! Are there any recommendations for the material or sources? Should the supports simply be replaced, or should they also be reinforced in other ways?

I use metal shelf brackets from the hardware store; they are thicker and more durable. Simply replacing them is often enough, and secure screw connections are important.

Replacing the beams is a good first step. Additionally, I recommend supporting the shelves on the sides with small brackets underneath the board, especially for long spans. A tip: paint the inner sides of the shelves before installation to prevent moisture damage. Have you already decided on the dimensions and material for the new shelves?

For the material choice, I am leaning towards birch plywood panels because they are stable enough and also look nice. I am considering a thickness of 18 mm (0.7 inches). I will roughly adjust the dimensions to match the original Besta measurements, as extendable shelves are unfortunately not planned. I think the brackets for support are a great idea, thanks! Does anyone have experience with installing the panels when the BESTA frame is already assembled? Is attachment through the edge rails sufficient, or should I additionally screw the shelves in place?
