Hello everyone, I would like to modify my Ikea Besta cabinet to create a practical bench with storage. I am particularly interested in the following points: How can I increase the stability of the Besta so that the bench can hold weight reliably? What type of seating surface is recommended, without appearing too bulky or reducing the storage space? And which materials are best suited to achieve an attractive look without compromising functionality? I would also appreciate tips on fastening, suitable dimensions, and possible additional reinforcements. Who has experience with these kinds of modifications and can share detailed insights?

Thank you for the previous advice; the details about stability and seat height have been particularly helpful. One thing is still not entirely clear to me: how can I best preserve the storage space when adding internal reinforcements? Will access to the compartments become difficult? Is it worth installing drawers or sliding doors as part of this renovation? It would be great if someone could provide concrete tips on combining storage optimization with seating functionality.

That’s an interesting question! In my experience, the best compromise is to position the reinforcements so that the load is carried at the outer edges, while keeping the middle sections as free as possible. You can easily integrate drawers beneath the seating surface if you make the seat cushion removable. This way, you have flexible storage space and the option to sit on it or store items inside. A handy trick is to fit the bench with smooth-operating hinges so the surface can also function as a lid. This gives you extra storage on top without losing much accessibility.

Very important: Pay attention to the load on the seating surface, especially if hinges are attached. The fastening should be sturdy; otherwise, it can break quickly with frequent opening. Drawers are useful if you often need access to smaller items; otherwise, open compartments are sufficient. Padding on the lid also protects against scratches and makes the bench more comfortable.
