Hello everyone, I am planning to convert the IKEA Besta system into a bench with integrated storage. I am particularly interested in how to construct and reinforce the modules so that the seating surface is stable enough for daily use, without the structure wobbling or getting damaged. It would also be helpful if someone could share tips on how to open the storage compartments under the bench—especially how to best incorporate drawers or flap mechanisms without them falling out of the main frame or affecting the seating surface. Are there any recommendations regarding the choice of materials or fasteners that specifically focus on stability and durability? I have already reviewed the standard IKEA instructions but could not find detailed guidance on benches. Thanks in advance for your help!

To build a stable bench seat from Besta, you should reinforce the modules on each side with additional wooden panels or brackets. For the storage opening, drawer slides or flip hinges designed for heavy loads are recommended.

Hello kin45, your project sounds exciting! I would recommend carefully measuring the Besta components first and checking the maximum loads they can support. For the seat surface, you can place a plywood panel or another sturdy wood panel directly on top and screw it to the carcasses, which will significantly increase stability. If you want to keep the storage compartments open, you can use smooth-running drawer slides. If you plan to use flaps, hinges with soft-close mechanisms are very helpful to prevent rattling or items falling out.

Hey kin45, will you soon be sitting on your custom Besta bench! 😄 Jokes aside, I built something similar and ensured stability with brackets and a thick seat panel. For storage, I used folding mechanisms that you can easily attach to the sides. This way, you avoid the hassle of pulling out drawers while still keeping everything in sight.

Regarding stability: The IKEA Besta units are primarily designed for shelving purposes and not for sustained seating loads. Therefore, I recommend reinforcing the base cabinets with an additional frame made from 18–22 mm (0.7–0.9 inch) thick plywood panels. The seat panel should be at least 20 mm (0.8 inch) thick and securely screwed to the cabinet. When choosing the opening mechanism, load capacity is crucial—soft-close hinges or high-quality drawer slides are effective solutions. At the same time, care must be taken that the reinforcements do not obstruct the drawer guidance.

The IKEA Besta modules themselves are mainly designed for shelving purposes and not for permanent seating loads.

Thank you for the advice. Are there any empirical data on how many kilograms a Besta depth of 40 cm (16 inches) can support before reinforcements definitely need to be added? I would like to build the bench about 150 cm (59 inches) long by placing several modules side by side, and it should easily hold at least 120 kg (265 lbs). Would it be better to install a central support beam, or would angled brackets be sufficient?
