usbomiI have a question regarding the cleaning of the glass panels on my Ikea Pax wardrobe and hope to exchange experiences and practical tips here in the forum. The glass panels are quite large in my case and unfortunately tend to show visible streaks and fingerprints fairly quickly, which is especially noticeable on the higher-quality glass surfaces. I am looking for an effective and streak-free cleaning solution—ideally without harsh chemicals that could damage the glass surface or frame. Does anyone know a reliable method that works well, or specific cleaners that have proven effective? I am also interested in how often you clean your glass panels to maintain their shine over time. Thank you in advance for your feedback and recommendations!
For cleaning Ikea Pax glass fronts, I recommend the following method, which has proven to be effective and gentle: - First, remove loose dust or dirt with a microfiber cloth to avoid scratches. - For the glass surfaces, use a mixture of water and a mild, pH-neutral glass cleaner, or alternatively a vinegar-water solution (1:1). - Spray the cleaner onto the cloth, not directly on the glass, to prevent liquid from getting into the frame. - Wipe in circular motions to loosen stains, then polish with a dry microfiber cloth to avoid streaks. - For tougher dirt, a small amount of isopropanol (70% alcohol) can be used, but not too often to prevent damage to the materials. It is important not to use abrasive sponges or aggressive cleaners (such as ammonia or chlorine-based products), as these can damage both the frame and the glass. Regarding frequency, cleaning every two weeks is sufficient for normal use. For heavier use, weekly cleaning is possible. The steps described effectively prevent streaking and protect the surface.

For the glass surfaces themselves, a mixture of water and a mild, pH-neutral glass cleaner works well, or alternatively a vinegar-water solution (1:1). From my own experience, I can confirm that this mixture works really well, especially for fingerprints, as I get far fewer streaks. However, I was initially a bit concerned that the vinegar might damage the frame material or the seals. Does anyone have experience with whether vinegar can cause damage if used over a longer period? I clean my Pax glass fronts at least once a week and sometimes find it really frustrating when streaks keep appearing, even though I wipe multiple times. Maybe it also depends on the cloth – does anyone have tips on microfiber cloths that are especially good for streak-free shine? Thanks in advance! 🙂

Does anyone have experience whether vinegar can cause damage with prolonged use? Diluted vinegar is generally safe as long as it is wiped off with clean water after application. Acetic acid can eventually leave slight dull spots on sensitive materials, especially if used concentrated and without rinsing. For Ikea Pax glass fronts, the frames and seals are usually durable, but I would still recommend not using vinegar for every cleaning session. Instead, use it as a special treatment every 2–3 weeks, for example.
Regarding microfiber cloths:
- I strongly recommend fine-woven, lint-free microfiber cloths designed specifically for glass and screen cleaning.
- Many inexpensive cloths are too coarse and tend to leave streaks or lint.
- It is also important that the cloth is clean and free from fabric softener residues after washing, as these also cause streaking.
About the rest of the cleaning process:
- Polish glass surfaces dry, preferably with a separate, fresh cloth.
- Always make sure that cleaning agents do not get into frame joints or seals, as these can swell or discolor.
These small details often determine the final result.
I just wanted to add that sometimes I also rely on traditional home remedies when I want to clean in the most environmentally friendly way possible. For my Pax glass fronts, I have had good results using plain water followed by polishing with newspaper. It sounds odd, but it works surprisingly well and leaves no streaks. Of course, it takes a bit longer and isn’t always super effective on greasy fingerprints, but for quick cleaning in between, it’s a great method.
I also occasionally use combination products from furniture stores that care for both the glass and the frames at the same time. This leaves a pleasant feel and helps protect the surfaces from getting dirty again too quickly.
I would advise against using harsh chemical cleaners, especially if you have children or pets. And very importantly: don’t clean with paper towels, as they can scratch the surface! Instead, it’s better to invest in a clean cloth, which pays off in the long run.
I hope these tips are helpful and wish you success with your next cleaning session!
