Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some IKEA Besta furniture and would like to clean it as quickly and gently as possible. It is important to me that neither the surfaces get damaged nor the materials are compromised.

Specifically, I am looking for tips and recommendations on which cleaning agents and tools are suitable for the typical coated MDF panels and glass fronts of Besta, to remove dirt effectively yet carefully.

Additionally, it would be helpful to receive advice on the care and protection of the furniture to keep the surfaces looking like new for as long as possible.

Who has experience cleaning IKEA Besta furniture and can offer valuable guidance?

It is best to use a soft, damp microfiber cloth for the surface.
For tougher stains, mild soapy water can help, but avoid using harsh cleaners.
Glass fronts can be cleaned with regular glass cleaner and dried with a lint-free cloth.

Hello Gaonra,

I completely understand your questions, since IKEA BESTA furniture usually has either a high-gloss or matte melamine coating, which is sensitive to harsh chemicals. Therefore, I recommend:

- For melamine surfaces: use a soft microfiber cloth, optionally slightly dampened with water and mild dish soap.
- Avoid abrasive sponges or strong cleaning agents, as they can scratch the surface.
- For glass fronts, use ammonia-free glass cleaners, as ammonia can damage the seals over time.
- Always wipe dry with a soft, dry cloth after cleaning to prevent water spots.

For protection:
- Regular dusting helps prevent dirt from settling in.
- Try to avoid direct sunlight exposure, as it can cause the material to fade.

I hope this gives you a good overview!

I would especially make sure not to use any harsh cleaners.
A microfiber cloth with warm water is usually enough, and for stains, a mild detergent can be used.
Avoid anything abrasive that could scratch mechanically.

I have also been thinking about this topic for a long time because I really want to keep my BESTA furniture well-maintained and tidy.

What I learned is that it’s important not to use too much water. If too much moisture remains on the edges, the MDF can sometimes swell a little.

Sometimes I was also concerned that stain removal might dull the surface, but with gentle rubbing and appropriate cleaners, it works well.

Maybe you have also experienced that despite all care, small scratches still appear? I simply tried to gently smooth them out with furniture polish – that gave me some reassurance.

I always feel a bit uncertain about plastic coatings, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that your cleaning goes smoothly.

I agree. One more tip: use glass cleaner sparingly, otherwise it can run onto the wood or MDF frames, which they don’t like very much.
