Hello everyone,

I am currently planning the installation of an IKEA Metod kitchen with individual open shelves instead of continuous closed cabinet doors. My main goal is to have the shelves installed neatly and securely, so that they are both visually appealing and capable of holding considerable weight.

My primary concern is how to properly integrate the open shelving without compromising the overall structure – especially whether special connectors are needed or if the standard Metod fittings can be used. I am also interested in how to create visually pleasing transitions between the open shelves and the closed units to ensure the kitchen looks cohesive.

Does anyone have experience with such combinations or any tips on what to watch out for when assembling open shelves, for example regarding stability, assembly process, or necessary accessories?

I look forward to your opinions and advice!

You can easily assemble the open shelves using the standard METOD side panels and shelf supports. It is important to additionally secure the shelves with angle brackets to ensure stability. For the transitions, cover panels are helpful, which IKEA offers, to create a clean edge.

Hello jonmi,

First of all, it’s good that you are considering both stability and appearance. Metod is modular, but adding open shelves requires more planning than simply using closed cabinets.

- You should first consider the structural stability of the entire assembly: open shelves put different stresses on the side panels because the load is not distributed by doors. I recommend using strong metal shelf supports (e.g., the IKEA Grundtal or Knoppärn series) and additional reinforcement with brackets on the side panels.

- The connection between the open shelves and closed cabinets can be elegantly designed with so-called connecting panels or trim. It’s worth carefully measuring the exact dimensions and aligning these panels precisely on the carcasses to avoid gaps.

- A common challenge is the different depth between shelves and cabinets – especially if you use different front styles. Make sure the back of the shelves is flush and no carcass parts protrude, which would affect the overall look.

- When assembling, be sure to follow the Metod instructions, but also use the additional shelving assembly guides for the shelves. Multiple installation steps require precision because small inaccuracies can add up.

- Regarding accessories: the standard Metod connectors are designed for closed furniture. For open shelves, you should use extra brackets and sturdy screws to prevent the carcass from twisting.

Do you already have a concrete plan for how many open shelves you want to install, or are they just individual accents? The width of the shelves also matters – for widths around 60cm (24 inches) or more, you should consider a middle support.

If you like, I can also put together a list of recommended materials for you.

I agree with that. However, my question is whether it is always necessary to use additional accessories or if it is sufficient to combine the existing components in a sensible way.

IKEA promotes Metod as offering a certain flexibility – doesn’t that also imply that the system is designed for open shelving without major modifications?

Much of this seems a matter of personal preference, but objectively, using too many brackets and connectors could unnecessarily complicate the design and make assembly more complex.

Perhaps jonmi could clarify what kind of load these open shelves are expected to carry and how the kitchen layout manages load distribution? That would help make the recommendations for assembly more targeted.
