Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Platsa shelving unit from IKEA and am wondering about the best and easiest way to clean these specific modules. The shelf is made of coated wooden panels and also has some open areas where dust and minor dirt tend to accumulate. I’m interested not only in quick and effective everyday cleaning but also in which products or methods are recommended to clean thoroughly without damaging the surface. Does anyone have tips or experience with the most suitable cleaners or tools? Advice on how to handle the holes or connection points, where dirt often collects, would also be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

Hey Moretau,

cool question, I also really like the PLATSA parts – they look great, but cleaning them can be a bit tricky. My tip: A microfiber cloth and lukewarm water usually do the trick to quickly wipe away dust. For corners and holes, I like to use a slightly damp toothbrush, which works well to get the dirt out.

For tougher stains, you can use a mild dish detergent, as the surface material does not tolerate harsh cleaners. And very important: After cleaning, wipe again with a dry cloth so nothing soaks in or leaves marks. This way, your PLATSA stays looking great and is super easy to keep clean! 😎

For cleaning the IKEA PLATSA shelving unit, it is recommended to use mild cleaning agents without harsh chemicals to avoid damaging the surface finish. The surfaces are generally made of melamine or similar plastic coatings, which are resistant to water and gentle cleaners.

- To remove dust, a dry microfiber cloth is sufficient.
- For stains, it is best to use a solution of warm water and a small amount of dish soap.
- Do not use abrasive sponges or solvents, as these can damage the surface.
- For hard-to-reach areas such as holes and connectors, soft brushes or compressed air are suitable.

These methods help preserve the surface and keep cleaning simple.

Thanks for the tip about compressed air. Could you also explain how you use it? I ask because I don’t have a can of compressed air – would a small handheld vacuum with the appropriate attachment work as well? And generally, I’m curious whether it’s better to disassemble the shelf for cleaning or leave it standing to avoid damaging the joints?

A brief explanation regarding your question about cleaning the IKEA PLATSA shelf:

- Compressed air from a spray can is excellent for blowing dust out of small holes and joints. A handheld vacuum with a narrow nozzle also works well, as it directly sucks up the dirt instead of just spreading it around.

- It is not necessarily required to completely disassemble the shelf for cleaning. On the contrary, taking it apart often results in more effort and may lead to reduced stability if reassembled incorrectly.

- It is recommended to empty the shelf thoroughly before cleaning, while keeping the individual modules assembled. This way, you can easily wipe all surfaces and carefully clean the holes without risking the structure.

Hope this helps!

I can confirm the vacuum cleaner approach – I also use a narrow brush attachment, and it works great. Compressed air is useful if you really want to blow away stubborn dust.

A small tip: If you prefer to clean small corners with a damp cloth, first use a soft toothpick tip or a cotton swab for the tight holes – that makes it even cleaner. This way you avoid the “kaboom” effect from compressed air spraying ;-)
