Hello everyone, I would like to start a detailed discussion on the topic: “How can an Ikea Pax wardrobe system be designed for optimal organization of children’s clothing, so that different sizes, seasonal changes, and various types of garments (e.g., pants, tops, rompers) are stored clearly and are quickly accessible?” I recently bought a Pax myself and am currently facing challenges with the layout. I am especially interested in how to make the best use of the limited storage space, which shelves or inserts are useful, and if you know any proven tips to keep the order for a long time. Also, any advice on how to adapt the system as the child grows without having to constantly reorganize everything would be appreciated. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
I organized my children’s Pax wardrobes using the following system: Step 1: Analyze the clothing – 70% tops, 20% trousers, 10% accessories. Step 2: Acquire drawers with dividers for socks and underwear. Step 3: Tops are hung on hangers in the same order every time, so they are easy to see and don’t get wrinkled. Step 4: For seasonal changes, I use two labeled boxes, which I place at the top of the wardrobe. Step 5: At the bottom, there are pull-out wire baskets to create space for larger clothing items. It is important to declutter regularly and adjust the system to keep it functional. Common mistake: putting in too much at once, which quickly leads to losing order.
When I think about it, a common saying comes to mind: Organization is half the battle! 😉 For the wardrobe used for children's clothes, I have a mix of defined sections and some flexibility. I recommend loosely packed drawers that you reassess regularly. A small tip: use colored adhesive tape on the outside of the drawers to indicate the category. Red for "top right: pants," blue for "bottom left: summer clothes"—this way, the eye is guided and chaos stays out.
Thank you for the previous contributions; they have been very helpful, especially the tip from giabau about quantity distribution and clear organization. I have a question for you: What dimensions do you recommend for the shelves and drawer inserts in the Pax? I have chosen the 100cm (39 inch) wide wardrobe with a depth of 60cm (24 inch). I’m asking because I want to order the inserts to fit precisely and not just buy everything blindly. Also, I’m interested in whether there are proven combination solutions that are particularly durable for children (stability, easy to clean, etc.).

What dimensions do you recommend for the shelves and drawer inserts in the Pax system? The Pax dimensions are quite standardized; for a 100cm (39 inch) wide wardrobe, shelves that are 100cm (39 inch) wide are appropriate. The depth is usually around 58cm (23 inch), actually slightly less. I recommend shelves about 56–57cm (22–22.5 inch) deep to allow drawers and doors to close smoothly. Regarding durability and ease of cleaning: melamine-coated shelves are easy to maintain, but if you prefer a wood-look, make sure the surface is resistant. For children, plastic or metal drawer slide systems are very robust and operate smoothly. It’s important not to overload the drawers and to clean them regularly.

For drawer inserts, aim for a maximum width of 90cm (35 inches) per drawer, as the rails and guides require some space. For depth, I recommend about 55cm (22 inches) to ensure smooth operation. Since children's clothing is not excessively heavy, the inserts do not need to be technically extremely sturdy, but they should preferably be made from ABS plastic or coated MDF, as these materials are easy to clean and durable.
