Hello everyone,
I have several Billy shelves from Ikea that I want to place on very smooth floors, specifically on parquet with a slightly glossy surface. Unfortunately, the shelves are not stable in some spots when pushed lightly, which is especially problematic when opening the doors or drawers. My question is: What is the best way to stabilize Billy shelves on smooth, slippery floors without affecting the appearance or damaging the parquet? Ideally, it should be a permanent solution that keeps the shelf securely in place but doesn’t leave marks or require too much effort. Does anyone have tips or experience with stabilizing furniture on such types of flooring? Thanks in advance!

It’s best to stick non-slip felt or rubber pads under the shelf feet. However, felt is often counterproductive because it tends to encourage sliding rather than prevent it. For smooth, slippery floors, rubber or silicone pads are much more effective.
I also believe it’s important not to focus solely on the feet. Stability is significantly improved by anchoring the unit to the wall. Without wall fastening, rapid shifting under load could occur despite using rubber pads.
Another point: it should be checked whether all the shelf feet are actually making even contact with the floor. Uneven support can quickly lead to instability.

I have small rubber pads under the feet of my Billy shelves that I got from the hardware store. Thanks for the tip! Do you have a specific recommendation for rubber pads that work particularly well?

In general, I can see that it probably requires a combination of several measures to really secure the shelf. Many thanks to all of you for the helpful and varied responses! 🙂
