Hello everyone, I have several Ikea PAX wardrobes at home and I am increasingly concerned about their stability. Specifically, I am wondering how to best secure these PAX wardrobes against accidental tipping. My apartment has uneven floors in some areas, and I am worried that especially with open doors or when children are nearby, there is a risk that the wardrobes could tip over. I am looking for practical and safe methods for securing them, preferably ones that are recommended or tested by Ikea. What are your experiences or recommendations? Are there specific wall brackets, anchors, or other tricks to improve the stability and safety of PAX furniture? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Is there a specific recommendation on which anchors or fasteners are best suited for this kind of situation?

For drywall (plasterboard) walls without load-bearing elements, using metal hollow wall anchors (such as toggle bolts or spring toggle anchors) is the best choice. They distribute the load behind the panel and provide relatively high load capacities.

Regarding your second question: connecting multiple Pax wardrobes together via their back panels or connecting pieces can indeed increase stability, as the overall structure becomes wider and more rigid. However, this does not replace the need for wall fastening. A combination of both is optimal.

Super important question and thanks for the detailed answers here! I initially panicked when I read how quickly PAX units can tip over. 😅

Here’s my advice: Just follow the Ikea instructions exactly, making sure to install the wall fastenings carefully and properly. In addition, I think it’s a good idea to add extra strap connections between the furniture and the wall yourself – these are also available at hardware stores and cost almost nothing.

Oh, and don’t forget the child safety check! A lock won’t help much if the little ones use the cabinets as climbing frames. 😉

In addition to wall fastenings, it is advisable not to overload cabinet doors and drawers or make them too heavy. If the load is concentrated too much toward the front, the risk of tipping increases. Therefore, the weight should be distributed as low as possible.
