Hello everyone,

I am planning to install several Ikea Pax wardrobes in my basement room. I intend to secure the back panels of the wardrobes to the basement wall to ensure greater stability and to prevent tipping.

My question is: what is the best way to safely attach an Ikea Pax wardrobe to a concrete basement wall? Which fasteners are suitable, what steps should I follow, and are there any special considerations to keep in mind (e.g., surface-mounted electrical conduits or moisture)? I am familiar with the basic functions of the Pax units but need specific recommendations for securely fixing them to basement walls, which are often rough and uneven.

Thanks in advance!

As a general rule, I recommend at least two mounting points per side of the cabinet, preferably at the top and bottom. This significantly increases stability and ensures the cabinet is securely fixed. If the wall is uneven, I suggest placing small plastic or rubber shims behind the side panels. Alternatively, you can make wooden spacer blocks to use as an adjustment. It is important that the mounting holes in the wall remain load-bearing and are not placed too far apart. Also, pay attention to the weight – the heavier the cabinet, the more mounting points are advisable.

In addition to the previous tips: For a damp wall, always ensure that the fasteners are corrosion-resistant. Stainless steel or galvanized steel are recommended. If insulation fits between the wall and the cabinet, be sure to install it to prevent moisture from remaining directly on the furniture. Also, make sure to drill pilot holes deep enough to fully accommodate the anchors.

A brief update from my side: Yesterday, I tried drilling with a hammer drill function and tested the wall; it is solid concrete, so quite sturdy. I definitely want to use rust-resistant anchors. Can anyone specifically recommend an anchor type that is foolproof for basement concrete walls? Also, I’m wondering if, for large Pax systems (over 2m (6.5 ft) in height), it might be advisable to add extra bracing or attach a panel to the wall, which would also provide additional stability.

Hello Bapifu, for basement concrete, I recommend using heavy-duty stainless steel anchors, such as Fischer FSA or Hilti-HLC-T. These are specifically designed for deep anchoring in solid concrete. For tall Pax cabinets, it is advisable to install additional braces to prevent tipping. This can be either a cross brace between the cabinets or a panel that you also attach to the wall. This way, you distribute the load and significantly increase stability.

Heavy-duty anchors made of stainless steel are reliable. Alternatively, chemical anchors also work well. They provide very strong holding power but are somewhat more expensive.

I agree with gregto that if you install very tall Pax wardrobes, an additional stabilization measure is highly recommended. A cladding securely anchored to the wall can serve as an indirect stabilization element. If you attach a subframe made of wood or metal, you can elegantly fix and align the wardrobe to it. It is best to use a spirit level and adjustable spacers to compensate for any unevenness.
