ᐅ How can I childproof Ikea Besta units using additional restraints or safety locks?

DeniskuHello everyone, I recently bought an Ikea Besta shelving unit that I now want to make as childproof as possible—especially by adding extra barriers to prevent my toddlers from opening the doors or accessing compartments containing fragile or dangerous items.
I am particularly interested in solutions that go beyond the standard Ikea safety locks, as I feel those are often not sturdy enough or can be easily damaged.
Does anyone have experience with additional barriers, such as special latches, childproof locks, or creative DIY solutions that can be mounted on the Besta?
It is also important to me that the safety features do not significantly affect the appearance and are durable over time. Perhaps someone can also share what Ikea itself recommends as accessories and whether those are worthwhile.
I look forward to your tips and suggestions!

These are more durable than plastic and harder to open. Additionally, secure the hinges with extra bolts. Ready-made solutions from safety product manufacturers are usually better than Ikea accessories.

- Use child safety locks with a metal core to prevent material fatigue.
- Install additional locks on the inside of the furniture to avoid affecting its appearance.
- Use anti-tip restraints directly on the Besta unit, as locking alone does not protect against tipping hazards.
Ikea offers child safety locks, but these are generally intended as temporary solutions. I recommend security devices from specialized manufacturers, which comply with common standards and are more durable.
DIY solutions can work, but in serious situations they are often less reliable and carry the risk of insufficient fastening.

I have a kind of small stainless steel lock mounted on the inside edge—it’s barely noticeable, and the kids don’t figure it out at all. Plus, the mandatory anti-tip device, because even a childproof lock won’t help if the furniture can tip over when little troublemakers try!
My tip: Check the installation requirements carefully beforehand, so you don’t have to drill afterwards—this can be tricky with Besta furniture due to the thin panels.
So, in short: metal locks plus an anti-tip device and good positioning—that should take care of child safety! 😎
