Hello everyone,

I have an Ikea KALLAX shelf unit at home, and for some time now, the doors have started to stick and wobble at the hinges. The hinges seem a bit worn out or slightly bent. Since I don’t want to replace the entire shelf, I’m wondering if anyone has experience repairing the KALLAX door hinges themselves.

Do you think this is doable with some basic DIY skills, or is it better to replace the hinges completely? How about the fit—are original spare parts easy to get, or are branded replacement hinges from hardware stores just as good?

I’ve already looked online, but most guides seem to focus on furniture with standard hinges, not the specific system used in KALLAX.

Has anyone done this before or have any useful tips on what to watch out for if I want to repair or replace the hinges myself?

Thanks for your feedback!

Hello fapra,

Your question about repairing the KALLAX hinges can definitely be answered in detail. The KALLAX doors use special inset hinges, usually designed for a 35mm (1 3/8 inch) cup hole. If the hinges have become loose, it is often due to wear of the moving parts or loose screws.

First, you should check if the hinge screws can still be tightened firmly, as this often reduces the wobbling. If the hinges are bent, a complete replacement is usually the only solution.

Original spare parts from Ikea are fairly affordable and fit precisely, which I personally prefer because universal or hardware store hinges often don’t fit exactly into the pre-drilled holes — then you unfortunately have to drill new ones, which is not ideal.

When replacing, you unscrew the old hinges, making sure not to damage the drilled holes, and install the new ones. It is important to adjust the hinges afterwards; they usually have small adjustment screws to regulate the door height, lateral position, and pressure. This allows for precise, millimeter-accurate door alignment.

If you have damaged screws or holes, small wood fillers or special wood repair kits can help secure the screws again.

Could you please describe in more detail whether the hinges feel loose or if the door actually comes out of the mounting? Depending on that, I can also give you advice on the best repair approach.

Best regards

I agree, fapra! Especially with these small specialty hinges, using original parts is often easier and less stressful. A little tightening of screws and readjustment usually makes the doors operate like new again.

I recently had exactly the same problem with one of my KALLAX doors – after a bit of "screwdriver therapy" and adjustment, the door closed properly and no longer got stuck.

If you replace the hinges, just take your time 🙂 The adjustment screws are sometimes really tiny, but with a good screwdriver, it’s not complicated. And if the door doesn’t fit perfectly, you can easily align it using the adjustment screws.

By the way, if the issue is with the attachment to the shelving unit itself, you might try rubber buffers or small washers to stop any rattling.

For me, it’s also helpful to occasionally apply some lubricating oil to the hinges to keep everything smooth.

So: Don’t hesitate, it’s not difficult and saves a lot of money! 🙂 Good luck.

I only tightened the screws on my KALLAX and lubricated everything well. Buying original hinges is worth it—they are inexpensive and fit perfectly. Replacement hinges from a hardware store might work, but you will need to drill and adjust them.
