Hello everyone,
up to what height are drawers still easily reachable? I am 175cm (5 ft 9 in) tall, my wife is a bit shorter.
What do you use? Photos are welcome.
Specifically: In our small pantry (150 x 105cm (59 x 41 inches)) there is a fridge-freezer unit against the back wall, and next to it currently an open shelf 40cm (16 inches) wide, but it’s never easy to reach all the way to the back there.
Idea: Equip the cabinet with drawers or pull-outs to improve access.
Current plan: See picture, top edge of the highest drawer at 155cm (61 inches):

Who has good or bad experiences here? Please share everything: successes, achievements, frustrations, mistakes. We want to learn.
Or has someone solved a similar problem (very limited space) quite differently and maybe much smarter? I’m all ears (and eyes).
Thanks for your replies and best regards,
Blubstar

All done. I made some last-minute changes to the plan:
- Quantity: 4
- Heights: 20, 20, 25, 35 cm (7.9, 7.9, 9.8, 13.8 inches)
- All stacked in two cabinets (carcasses) each 60 cm (24 inches) high (didn’t feel like cutting down a tall cabinet), screwed onto a fixed base about 60 cm (24 inches) high attached to the wall
Fronts were homemade:
- Each 5 cm (2 inches) shorter than the actual drawer height; this saves the need for handles since you can grip from above
- Cuts are therefore 15, 15, 20, 30 cm (6, 6, 8, 12 inches) from a single very cheap 80 x 40 cm (31.5 x 16 inches) shelf board from the hardware store
- Added edge banding by ironing it on, and done
- Total cost: 5€
- The drawer runners are screwed into the fronts with 3.5 x 17 mm (0.14 x 0.67 inches) screws
Here are two pictures.
Interestingly, I now have too little space for canned goods, while only a few bottles are stored in the lower compartment. The rest has been relocated elsewhere. So another modification is planned:
- Either two full drawers; for example, 20 and 15 cm instead of 35 cm (8 and 6 inches instead of 14 inches)
- Or keep the 35 cm (14 inches) drawer and add an inner drawer above it. It would be great if this inner drawer
a) were shorter, so bottles can still stand in front in the large drawer, and
b) could still be fully extended for easy access.
For that, I’d basically need a short drawer on the long runners. Since the drawer and runners always come as a set, I’m thinking of simply shortening the bottom panel of a long drawer and attaching the front with brackets. The sides would fully extend, but there’s nothing blocking them where they slide out. Let’s see if and when I try this.
Cheers,
Kai
