Hello everyone,
I recently bought an IKEA PLATSA system for a wall unit and am thinking about how to make the handles both attractive and practical. The handles that come with it are often quite simple and unfortunately not very elegant. Do you have any tips or tricks for attaching stylish handles to IKEA PLATSA furniture? Perhaps you have experience with alternative handles, mounting options, or even DIY solutions that enhance the appearance of the system? I am especially interested in a solution that is both functional and visually appealing, without being too expensive or complicated. Thanks for your suggestions!

Hello Mike,
I’m familiar with that issue, especially with PLATSA, as I often find the standard handles unattractive. I fitted my cabinets with leather handles that are attached using eyelets and screws. It gives a very high-quality and warm feel, especially in the living area. At the same time, it’s an affordable option if you have some time to spare. Go ahead and give it a try – it’s really fun to upgrade furniture yourself.
Sometimes I also wonder how others do it and which materials they prefer. How flexible are you regarding the attachment method? Does it have to involve drilling, or could it also be glued or clamped?

Hi Mike,
I have often used simple bar handles from the hardware store for PLATSA. They are sturdy and relatively inexpensive. Drill holes can usually be made at the standardized positions of the furniture. Alternatively, you can also use handle strips that you screw onto the top of the door – elegant and practical.

Hello,
when it comes to handles for PLATSA, there are some practical considerations since the system is modular and offers standardized drilling points.
- Use of furniture handles from hardware stores that are compatible in hole spacing and length (e.g., 128mm (5 inches) or 160mm (6¼ inches))
- Alternatively, handle strips that can be attached as top rails on the front (e.g., aluminum or wood)
- DIY solutions with leather straps or metal tubes, which can be customized and pre-drilled accordingly
It is important to accurately align the mounting points so the handles hold firmly and the fronts do not warp. Additionally, there are also recessed handles available for a more minimalist look if desired.
Precise preparation and measurement are key to success here.

In addition to Juan31’s comments: If you rely on standard drill holes, it is important to consider the load capacity of the screws and handle materials used. Some cheaper plastic handles can break easily under heavy use.
It is also advisable to choose handles that are ergonomically shaped and visually match the room. For example, matte black metal handles look very elegant in modern apartments and are highly durable.
In summary, I recommend:
- Selecting high-quality handle materials
- Precisely following measurements and drill points
- Considering ergonomic design
This will increase both durability and ease of use.
