Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I purchased the IKEA Metod kitchen cabinet fronts with glass inserts and am generally very satisfied. However, I have a small issue when cleaning the glass panels. I want the glass surfaces to be as streak-free as possible after cleaning while being gentle enough to avoid scratches or damage to both the glass and the frames.

So far, I have mostly used common glass cleaners and microfiber cloths, but the results vary greatly—often small streaks or smudges remain, which is especially annoying in natural daylight.

My specific questions are therefore:
- Which cleaning agents work best for the glass fronts of IKEA Metod cabinets to achieve a streak-free and gentle clean?
- Are there particular techniques or steps to follow during cleaning to prevent material damage?
- What types of cloths or tools do you recommend for this task?

I look forward to your tips and experiences, as I would like to optimize the cleaning process without having to rely on harsh chemicals in the future.

Thank you in advance!

Hello goemil37,

I’m very familiar with the problem of streaks on glass fronts! 🙃 For my Metod glass fronts, I always use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth combined with diluted vinegar water (about 1 part vinegar, 3 parts water). This method is not only inexpensive but also gentle and reliably removes most streaks.

A little tip: after cleaning, simply wipe again with a dry microfiber cloth—without applying pressure—so the cloth glides smoothly over the surface and absorbs any remaining moisture.

I avoid harsh glass cleaners, which often contain additives that can leave residues or gradually damage the glass. And very important: no scrubbing pads or coarse cloths, as they can cause scratches!

Good luck, it makes a big difference! 🙂

Vinegar water may sound harmless, but I would argue that many people still blindly reach for expensive specialized cleaning products. The additives in those cleaners usually just leave more residue and myths about scratch protection.

I also believe that excessive cleaning, especially with damp cloths, can weaken the seal on the glass fronts over time. Even mild household remedies like vinegar can be harsh if overused.

My approach: clean with a damp cloth very rarely and instead wipe regularly with a dry cloth. Water and too many chemicals tend to cause more problems than solutions when it comes to long-term care. But of course, everyone has their own philosophy.

For factual clarification:

The IKEA Metod glass fronts generally consist of real glass with aluminum or plastic frames.

For cleaning, IKEA recommends using mild, acid-free cleaners. Vinegar essence, as suggested by kaju67, can potentially damage the aluminum profiles, so caution is advised.

A proven cleaning method is:
- Lightly dampen the glass surface with clear, lukewarm water
- Use a very mild, pH-neutral soap solution
- Clean with a soft, non-abrasive microfiber cloth
- Immediately wipe dry with a clean, dry microfiber cloth to prevent water spots

Mechanical stress (such as abrasive sponges or stiff brushes) should be avoided, as these can scratch the glass surface or cause dull spots.

Additionally, I recommend protecting sensitive sealing joints or frames from moisture, as mold or corrosion can develop otherwise.

Conclusion: Gentle, mild cleaning with appropriate materials and immediate drying are essential for streak-free and long-lasting results.
