Hello everyone, I have a question that’s currently on my mind as I’m setting up my apartment: Can I install an IKEA PAX wardrobe in a rental property without securing it to the wall?

I live in an older building with relatively thin walls, and my landlord has explicitly asked me not to drill any holes in the walls. My PAX wardrobe is about 2 meters (6 ft 7 in) tall and 1 meter (3 ft 3 in) wide. I’m wondering how stable such a large piece of furniture is without wall anchors. Are there any tips on how to ensure safety without damaging the walls? And what about the legal perspective, especially if something were to happen?

I’m looking forward to hearing about your experiences and practical advice!

Thanks for this detailed overview! I especially find the idea of securing with ceiling rods interesting. Has anyone had experience with this? Does it work reliably?

I have personally secured a Pax wardrobe to the ceiling using tension rods, and it works surprisingly well. It’s important that the ceiling is solid enough (not a suspended ceiling) and that the tension rods are tightly fixed.

Regarding liability: generally, the furniture owner is responsible if the wardrobe tips over and causes injury. However, if the landlord explicitly forbids drilling, you should request in writing an exception allowing safety fastenings. Otherwise, liability issues can become complicated in case of damage.

So, it is worthwhile to find a solution that balances both parties’ interests.

Good morning! That sounds great, especially when drilling into walls is not an option. Having a sturdy ceiling is really valuable here, otherwise the wardrobe is basically hanging in mid-air – which isn’t much safer, haha.

For added stability, you can also place a non-slip mat underneath. This way, the wardrobe stays rock solid, and the landlord stays happy since the walls remain undamaged.

So, to summarize: PAX without wall anchors? It’s possible, but only with smart alternatives like ceiling tension rods and anti-slip pads. This helps preserve the charm of our rental home while keeping the wardrobe stable.
