Hello everyone, I have an Ikea Billy shelf and am considering replacing the standard wooden shelves with glass shelves. My specific question is: Is it technically and practically possible to swap the wooden shelves of the Billy unit for glass shelves without compromising the stability and safety of the shelf? Are any modifications needed to securely fix the glass shelves, and are there any recommended solutions or experiences? I look forward to your advice!
Hello Heinrichna, I have done this myself before. It is important to use appropriate glass inserts on the glass shelves that act as shelf liners, so the glass does not rest directly on the metal brackets or wooden strips. This helps distribute the pressure evenly and extends the lifespan of the glass. I also recommend safety glass (tempered glass).
That is true, which is why I also replace the brackets.
If you like, I can send you a detailed list with measurements.

The hole spacing for the support strips usually does not fit glass.

Heinrichna21 Mar 2017 16:27Thanks in advance for the answers! Two points interest me in particular: First, how exactly do you replace the brackets? Are there suitable spare parts available from Ikea, or do you use other systems? And second, how much space should there be between the glass and the shelving unit if no adjustments can be made? I want to avoid the glass touching the sides and ideally have it securely fixed.

How exactly do you replace the brackets?Ikea doesn’t offer anything special for this. I simply used stainless steel brackets with rubber pads and utilized the existing holes, which holds the glass shelves surprisingly well.
Regarding your second point: A small gap of about 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 inches) from the shelf wall is ideal to prevent the glass from rubbing or cracking due to shrinkage or slight movements. Many use small plastic or felt strips as spacers. It is important that the glass is securely positioned and does not wobble.
