Hello everyone, I have an Ikea Billy shelf and am considering replacing the standard wooden shelves with glass shelves. My specific question is: Is it technically and practically possible to swap the wooden shelves of the Billy unit for glass shelves without compromising the stability and safety of the shelf? Are any modifications needed to securely fix the glass shelves, and are there any recommended solutions or experiences? I look forward to your advice!

Hello, yes, that is basically possible. You just need to make sure that the glass shelves are thick enough (at least 6-8 mm (1/4-5/16 inches)) and that you use appropriate brackets or supports to secure the glass. Otherwise, it can become unstable.

I would recommend not installing standard glass shelves directly. The Billy bookcase is designed for wood, and the hole spacing for the support strips usually does not fit glass. There are special glass panels with appropriate drillings or glass shelf supports, but these often require minor modifications or adjustments to the brackets. Safety is the top priority here.

I have tried this before: using glass shelves as replacements works, but only with additional brackets or supports. Simply placing them on the standard wooden cleats is too unstable.

I can understand that you want to visually enhance your Billy shelf. Glass shelves really look elegant. However, I would recommend not overlooking safety, especially if there are children or pets in the household. Perhaps you can find a workshop that can custom-make the glass shelves with rubber pads. This will make everything more stable and also gentler on the glass.

Yes, glass shelves fit, but always use rubber buffers or similar protection. If you convert the shelf to metal brackets, the glass will hold better.
