nelsonko7024 Sep 2021 08:43Hello everyone,
I would like to start a discussion on how to effectively use the Ikea PAX system for storing sports equipment. I am especially interested in flexible solutions to organize various sports items, whether yoga mats, dumbbells, tennis or soccer gear, in a neat and space-saving way inside a PAX wardrobe. Ideally, also with tips for organizing smaller accessories like balls, bands, or gloves.
How have you personally configured or modified your PAX to ensure optimal sports equipment storage? Are there particular shelves, boxes, or holders that have proven especially useful?
I am very much looking forward to your experiences and suggestions!

Hey nelsonko70, great that you’re asking such a practical question! 😃 I use my PAX system exactly for this purpose – to store exercise equipment perfectly while keeping everything within easy reach!
I installed a few shelves, but also used boxes and baskets, which work really well for smaller items. For dumbbells, I made holders from wooden slats and mounted them on the sides. It’s important to plan the shelf heights flexibly so you can also fit things like a yoga mat and rackets. And don’t forget side hooks – they’re really handy for jump ropes or bands!
Don’t stress, PAX is incredibly adaptable – don’t give up, it will turn out great! 💪

To effectively use the Ikea PAX system for storing sports equipment, I recommend a methodical approach:
- First, measure all your sports gear to determine the optimal height and depth of the shelves.
- For longer items like yoga mats or skis, ideally plan for special holders or dedicated compartments.
- Use boxes with labels or modular dividers for small accessories such as resistance bands or gloves.
- Equip the inside of the doors with hook rails or magnets for small items.
It is also important to consider the load limits of the shelves, especially for heavy equipment; in some cases, installing additional reinforcements or choosing PAX doors that can be opened without a frame makes it easier to access your gear. What does your space look like? Is the wardrobe built into a niche or free-standing?

Also, even though it takes quite a bit of planning at first, with a little creativity you’ll be surprised how much it can hold. I love that the system can be expanded continuously!
I also use the PAX system for my small home gym! What really helped:
- sturdy storage boxes for the dumbbells
- casters on the boxes for easy access
- secure mounts for the jump rope and resistance bands on the inside of the door
You just have to measure the space carefully, then everything is within reach and organized. It’s fun to customize systems like this! 😊
