Good morning everyone,

I have a question that has been on my mind lately while setting up my apartment: Are there actually childproof locking mechanisms for the doors of the IKEA PAX wardrobe?

I have two young children aged 2 and 4 years and want to prevent them from opening the wardrobe doors unsupervised and possibly accessing dangerous or delicate items. I am aware that PAX doors do not come with built-in child safety locks by default, as they focus more on simple design and functionality.

Therefore, I am interested to know if there are special, reliable aftermarket solutions available that are safe and easy to install without significantly compromising the look or usability of the wardrobe. I would also appreciate experiences from people who have already tested practical systems – how secure are they? Are there any recommendations for particular products or techniques to make PAX doors childproof?

I look forward to your opinions and suggestions!

For sliding doors, I specifically recommend systems with bin locks or lockable handles that are designed especially for use with lightweight sliding doors.

Inside, lockable boxes, such as metal boxes or small consoles that can be placed on shelves, are suitable. These often come with security handles or can be locked. It is important to secure them firmly to prevent slipping.

The combination of a door lock and securing the contents significantly increases security.

Great, I just read that you also have sliding doors! I would recommend using magnetic catches for hinged doors on Pax wardrobes and lockable handles for sliding doors.

Important: Don’t get discouraged – the right solutions are available. Just keep trying and stay persistent. This way, the kids won’t be able to get in unexpectedly, and you can stay relaxed!

Short and precise: For PAX hinged doors use magnetic locks, for sliding doors use lockable handles or special latches. Interior boxes should only be used as a supplement, not as the main solution.

Thanks for all the tips. I am summarizing the following recommendations for childproofing PAX doors:
- For hinged doors: magnetic child locks that are installed on the inside
- For sliding doors: lockable handles or special bolts
- Additionally, secure the contents with lockable boxes

If anyone has practical advice on installation or product suggestions, please share! I will implement these recommendations and report back with my experiences.
