Hello everyone,
I would like to start a discussion about alternative handles that work well with Ikea PAX doors. Specifically, I’m looking for suggestions on which types or styles of handles you would recommend if you want to replace the original PAX handles—whether for design, comfort, or installation reasons.
It’s important to me that the handles not only look good together but are also compatible in terms of mounting or can be installed with reasonable effort. Maybe there are certain handle dimensions or fastening methods that have proven especially reliable for PAX doors.
I’m looking forward to your experiences and recommendations! Which alternative handles do you use on your PAX wardrobes, and what should be considered when choosing them?

What about handles that are a bit more unusual, like leather or rope handles? Has anyone tried these more extravagant options with PAX yet?I bought leather handles for my PAX from a small manufacturer, which can simply be attached with screws. They look really cool and feel nice to touch. The only downside is that if kids use the wardrobe, the leather parts might get dirty or wear out faster. But installing them wasn’t a big deal.

Do the screws stay secure on the IKEA doors if you often pull on small handles? From my experience, the screws hold up pretty well even though the doors are thin. However, if you have very sturdy or heavy doors, it might be a good idea to reinforce them with something stronger, as already mentioned.
In everyday use, I don’t really notice any difference compared to the original handles.

What about handles that are a bit more unusual, like leather or rope handles? That’s a very interesting question! In principle, it’s certainly possible, but with leather and rope handles, the method of attachment is always important. Most of these handles use two small screws that are drilled through the door. With PAX doors made from thin particleboard, the material around the screws can sometimes fray over time if the handles are used frequently.
Therefore, I recommend: if you choose such handles, make sure the screws are long enough and ideally reinforced on the inside with small washers. Another option is to secure the screws with some wood glue to prevent them from loosening.
Also, consider the style of your interior design. Leather goes especially well with warm wood tones and rustic styles. Rope tends to suit nautical or Scandinavian themes. Both can provide an appealing contrast to the clean, modern look of PAX doors.
If you like, I can explain some specific installation options in more detail.

A quick tip for anyone trying this out: If you use a leather handle that is still quite soft, make sure the screws aren’t too thin — otherwise, the leather can get caught or tear over time.
Also important: don’t forget leather care! A bit of leather balm keeps the handles supple and extends their lifespan.
Otherwise, it’s better to invest once and avoid having to replace the handles constantly.
Hello,
I’d like to briefly point out something about installation that is often underestimated:
- PAX doors are usually about 16 mm (0.6 inches) thick.
- For handles with long screws, make sure they don’t go all the way through to the back and possibly damage the interior fittings.
- If you need to drill new holes, it’s best to use a drill stand to ensure the holes are straight and precise.
- For heavy handle types like metal bars, you can increase stability by adding washers or expansion nuts.
I also recommend tightening all screws and handles again after a few weeks to prevent loosening and extend durability.
In short: planning and care are important when replacing handles.

One more question about the look: Do you have any tips on which handle colors work best with typical white or black PAX doors? More warm metal tones like copper, or cooler ones like stainless steel?
I’m not set on a specific option but want to achieve a harmonious overall impression.

For black doors, stainless steel works great; it looks clean and modern. Matte black is also stylish and very popular.
If you prefer natural materials, wood handles in a honey tone match white doors perfectly, while darker woods or even leather suit black doors better.
My motto: A bit of courage pays off, but the overall look of the room, furniture, and handles should stay balanced!
By the way, the matte stainless steel finish also coordinates well with matching bathroom fixtures if you’re combining styles in one space.
