I am currently considering whether IKEA Pax wardrobes are a suitable storage solution for a guest room. On one hand, I wonder if their maximum flexibility in floor plans and compartment options really provides a genuine advantage compared to more affordable or more specialized wardrobes. On the other hand, space in my guest room is quite limited, so I would like to know if the dimensions and design of the Pax wardrobes work well in small rooms or if they tend to appear bulky.

I am also interested in how durable the wardrobes are in terms of occasional use—for example, I plan to store seasonal bedding and a few clothes that guests might need. Additionally, I would appreciate experiences with assembly and the optional interior fittings, as I am not yet entirely clear on the variety of wardrobe types and features.

So, are Pax wardrobes a sensible and practical solution for a guest room? Perhaps someone can share real experiences or offer alternative suggestions that provide similar benefits but work better in smaller spaces?

Pax wardrobes are generally very flexible thanks to modular components and various interior fittings. The ability to adjust the height, width, and internal layout using shelves, hanging rods, and drawers is a major advantage, especially for more complex storage needs like in a guest room with different items (bedding, clothing, accessories).

However, in tight spaces, it is important to pay close attention to the dimensions: standard widths are usually 50 or 75cm (20 or 30 inches), which can quickly become dominant in small rooms. To avoid bulky pieces, narrower or lower versions or more open designs without doors are better options.

Regarding durability: the construction is solid but made from particleboard with a laminate finish, which shows typical signs of wear over time. This is sufficient for occasional use. Assembly requires some DIY skills and time; if you lack experience, I recommend getting assistance.

Overall, it is a very good system for a guest room if you carefully plan the space and intended use.

Pax is flexible and useful if you need storage space. However, in small rooms, it can quickly appear too bulky. Also consider open shelves or dressers, which feel lighter in the room.

A critical question: Does this versatility really suit a room where guests will likely need little, or is it overengineered?

Also, I wonder if anyone has experience with the long-term durability of the hinges and drawer slides when used only occasionally. I find it hard to believe that such a modular wardrobe will remain more stable over time compared to a simpler piece of furniture.

What about the visual impact? Some users complain that the white wardrobe fronts appear very dominant in small rooms and make the space feel smaller.

Tinaneo’s post raises important points. I would like to add some more detailed thoughts here, as I have personally assembled and used Pax wardrobe systems for an extended period.

First: Modularity is indeed a double-edged sword. For the guest room, this means:
- If you only need occasional storage space, simple shelves or dressers are often more cost-effective and space-saving.
- However, if you want to remain flexible, for example for coats, bed linen, or small suitcases, Pax allows you to customize the setup very individually.

Second: Assembly and quality
- Assembly is time-consuming and requires patience. Mistakes during assembly can affect stability.
- The components are made of particleboard; care is needed with moisture or excessive loads.
- The doors are well finished, but the hinges are not designed for heavy loads, so avoid overloading.

Third: Appearance and spatial impression
- White options brighten small rooms but can sometimes look bulky with minimalist decor.
- Simple, frameless fronts and subtle colors are recommended.

Summary: Pax wardrobes offer a practical solution for guest rooms if assembly and use are realistically assessed and room size is taken into account. Simpler solutions may be better if only limited storage is needed.

My experience: Pax is good if you want to stay flexible. Alternatively, simple cabinets without much hardware are less prone to issues. For a small guest room, it’s better to build narrow and tall.
