Hello everyone,

I recently bought a BILLY shelf unit from IKEA and I am now installing the doors. I noticed that the doors do not close completely flush and one side sticks slightly.

My question: What is the best way to adjust the BILLY shelf doors so they close properly and smoothly again? Is there a step-by-step guide I should follow? I especially want to avoid tightening the screws too much or leaving them too loose, as I don’t want to damage the shelf.

I appreciate your tips and experiences. Thanks in advance!

Hello lemin,

I completely understand how frustrating it is when the doors of the BILLY unit don’t close properly. I’ve experienced that too, and it was quite stressful at first. But don’t worry, adjusting them is not as complicated as it seems.

First, you should slightly loosen the screws on the hinges so you can position the door. Then, use the small adjustment screws on the hinges to change the height and depth of the door.

I think it’s important to take your time and turn each screw very gently, ideally just a quarter turn at a time. After each adjustment, check how the door closes.

That’s very sensible. Too loose a hinge can make the door unstable, and too tight can cause the material to fray.

Good luck, you can do it! If you like, I can write down the exact steps I followed.

Hey lemin :-)

I love the BILLY shelves, but these doors really have a mind of their own, don’t they? However, adjusting them isn’t that difficult. Here’s my personal handy tip on how to quickly get it under control:

1. Loosen the mounting screws on the hinges so the door becomes movable.
2. Then use the vertical adjustment (at the very top or bottom of the hinge) to adjust the height so the door doesn’t rub.
3. The horizontal screw next to the hinge lets you move the door left or right – great if the door isn’t flush with the side panels.
4. Finally, you can check the depth – this screw moves the door closer to or further away from the shelf frame.

A little tip: after each small screw turn, close the door again and check if everything fits.

And yes, take it slow and easy, just like you said. Otherwise, you might end up with bent doors ;-)

Exactly, patience is half the battle. Good luck and have fun tinkering!

Hello lemin,

I would like to add a few more detailed explanations so you have a complete picture and can proceed confidently.

The BILLY shelf usually uses adjustable hinges that can be adjusted in three ways: height, width/pivot, and depth.

1. Height adjustment: Look for a screw on the upper and lower hinge that allows vertical adjustment. Using a screwdriver, you can slightly move the door up or down. This is especially important if the doors are not aligned at the same height or rub against each other.

2. Lateral adjustment (width): This is one of the most common adjustments. There is a screw near the middle of the hinge that allows you to shift the door sideways so it lines up flush with the frame.

3. Depth adjustment: This affects how far the door protrudes from the shelf. If the door sticks out too far, it may rub or not close properly. Please proceed very gently when adjusting this.

Important: Never turn any screw more than half a turn per step, and check the effect in the closed position after each adjustment.

If you need help with the terms or prefer a step-by-step guide, feel free to ask. I can also put together a small checklist for you.

That is really the key! Patience and a steady hand are essential.

Hello lemin,

a quick additional tip from me to make fine-tuning easier in practice:

I personally tighten the screws last, once I'm completely satisfied with the adjustment. This way, you can adjust the door as much as needed without constantly struggling against screws that are too tight.

Another tip I learned: If the doors don’t fit quite right for an extended period, it can help to completely remove and clean the hinges. Sometimes small wood chips or dust in the threads make adjustments more difficult.

From my experience: This little patience game not only leads to success but also helps you appreciate your furniture even more 🙂

Good luck with everything! 🙂
